Seems normal

APPS for 06 3500

Ok this is a new one for me. Started today, oil pressure at least 10 psi higher than ever before.
Conditions, Outside temp in the morning startup 68 degrees, fleetguard oil filter, Rotella T6 15W40 (900 miles on oil change), Autometer mechanical oil pressure gauge. at startup idle 80psi (normal 70psi cold), 1800 rpms, pegs autometer gauge at 100 psi. Engine warms up everything is normal, 24psi at idle, 70 psi at 1900 rpm. motor runs like it should.
Startup after work 3pm out side temp 74 degrees, does the same thing. Checked oil, where it should be, color is correct.
140000 on motor rebuild, the oil cooler and bypass assembly and oil pump, new Cummins part at that time.
ok any ideas?
Thanks
Kyle

Ok, still don't know what's up with the oil pressure, it's almost gone back to normal, about 5psi higher than it was, but runs great so I'll drive it another 1000 miles and change oil.

I started responding to this and got side tracked, sorry.

Since you have a mechanical gauge there is a chance the gauge is bad and there is a chance your oil pressure regulating valve is bad. The oil pressure regulating valve is supposed to open at 75 psi and route oil back to the oil pump inlet. It threads into the oil filter housing.

It would seem the gauge is accurate as the pressures seem normal when the oil is warm and the pressure regulating valve isn’t in operation. I would still verify the accuracy of the gauge thou.

This is the valve.

View attachment 139605 Check oil pressure with another gauge (a cheap one I had laying around) it is within 2psi of the auto meter I have installed. Plan is still to change oil in about 700 miles and also check the oil pressure relief valve which I'm there, And see what happens. Last oil change was way over my normal 6000 miles, I had pushed it to 8500 miles, (used/leaked 1 1/2 quarts).
This should be done first of the month.
Thanks
Kyle
