Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) High Pitched Whining around 2k RPM

Hey guys, my dads truck just developed a whining noise at about 2k rpm. It sounds like it is coming from the drivers side, but it also sounds much like the turbo. It started today, after the 2nd or 3rd start of the day. It can't be a normal thing, because it started so suddenly. The noise is very loud, increases with rpm, and it will only do it under load. I tried putting it in park and revving it up, but i could not hear anything when looking under the hood. I checked all of the intake hoses, and everything looks ok. I did a search on this, and a couple of other people had the same problem, but i could not find a solution. thanks guys!

sorry, its a 99 with auto. we have a valve body, stage 2 injectors, ez box, and the wastegate boost elbow guy.

Check your exhaust manifold bolts, I have worked on a few trucks that have been missing manifold bolts in the back. You could get a whistle from this.

Suggest you check all connection clamps between the turbo and the intake horn. Also check the gasket between intake horn and intake manifold.

that pesky little "air Horn" that fits between the air box and the fender.

The following is from Fritz's website. I had a friend that had this problem suddenly appear on his 99. Sounded like it was coming from the passenger side and coming through the AC vents at about 2000 RPMS.

Whistling or moaning from heater core/heater box area - caused by a coolant supply hose connector

for repair - see Star Center Note and TSB 09-04-99

Also described as a growling whirring sound and if I held the rpm of the engine at 1550... it would stay right there... sounding like it was coming from somewhere in the front of the truck.

Also described as a howling/warbling type sound most noticeable with a very light throttle and was most obnoxious around 2000 rpm. .

Sounds like a small boost leak. If it is whistling it is not that big, but it is going to get worse. Check the gaskets between the airhorn and the grid heaters. Also check that the gasket did not slide out of the cover on top of the intake manifold, this is pretty common BTW. Look under the injection lines up tight against the head and on the outboard edge. I really doubt it is a boost tube boot that slipped, but it could be a pinhole opening when they expand like a ballon.



You may need to pressure test the system, do a search and there are lots of threads on how to do that. Pressurize it and a cigarrette or a punk stick will show the leak easily.

If you guys installed the injectors the gaskets on the intake manifold and grid heaters are the PRIME suspects, you take bolts out of both and can pinch the gasket or notget them quite tight enough.

Hey alan, that sounds exactly like the problem I have. My dad is gone with the truck right now, dirt bike riding, but when he gets back I will definitly try out that coolant hose. The injectors were installed quite some time ago, so i dont think it is a problem of some of the bolts being overtight. But we all know how bolts just LOVE to back themselves out. I will be sure to check out all the bolts on the manifolds. Thanks for all the help guys!

Mvannuys, When my buddy called with his, it had just gotten cold and had been so for a few days. He took me for a ride and I couldn't believe it. First, I thought it was the turbo, then maybe the transfer case. The whine was very loud and I couldn't pin down where it was coming from. It seemed to be all over. We got back to his house and I decided to remove that little orifice in the heater line and it solved it immediately. Hope this is your problem because it is an easy fix. Merry Christmas.

problem fixed! thanks a ton guys. i just pulled the little washer, and i will get a new one on order. the sounds can be heard a little bit, so i am hoping a new little rubber dude should restore it to the stock noises. thanks again, u guys are a wealth of info.

i have not ordered it yet, but if u think i shouldn't i wont. will removing the inner liner in the hose help the problem more? thanks

We didn't put the orifice/washer back in cause we didn't have one and my buddy was happy the truck was quiet so we left it alone. I'm not sure on the inner liner.

whinning noise

my 2001 clubcab did that. i had a recall done and when they were done with it, it was whining. the reason ended up being that the rubber air hoses that the turbo pumped through needed to be loosened and just rotated ever so slightly. it annoyed me, that they caused the problem to begin with. matt

I dug this old post up to see if it's possible that my 2001 could have the same problem. Anyone heard the whining from their 2001? Mine occurs only under boost at freeway speeds, but otherwise fits the descriptions listed here.
