I just screwed my high-speed idle screw in the other night. After hearing about the idea on this sight and researching how to do it, I got a hold of a buddy who has a friend that works at Cummins and found out some more info on removing that cover. To save all of you guys that haven't done it yet, the headaches that those of you have done it got from the experience; I thought I would share my findings. To complete the whole process should only take about 1/2 hour or less. First, take the two master cylinder nuts off the booster and set the master cylinder aside out of the way... be careful with the lines. Next, take a small jeweler's screwdriver and pick the lead out of the slotted screw that holds the cover on. The lead is super soft and very easy to whittle out with the screwdriver or a pick. Once the lead is removed, simply take a slotted screwdriver and remove the screw. The cover will slide right over the high-speed idle screw, allowing access to the lock nut that holds the idle screw in. Using a pick, insert the pick end into the safety wire hole in the high speed idle screw head (holding it in place) and loosen the nut. Continue holding the screw in place with the pick and keep backing the nut off. Turn the screw in until it bottoms, and then tighten the nut back up. Re-attach the master cylinder and you're back in business. Doing a road test on mine, I found that the transmission now shifts more like a gasser (at least gives you that sensation). The motor pulls easily (unloaded) to 2900 RPM in first and second gears. The truck is definitely a pleasure to drive now. What the new torque plate did for OD/full lock, the high-speed idle screw did for everything else.
Good luck and hope this was of help!
