Last week I started to notice a vibration that starts at about 70mph with some throttle on. Ease of and it goes away. So today I went under and found that the nut on the yoke from the trasfercase for the rear drive line was loose. I haven't driven it sence I tightened it but I'm wondering if anybody else has had this happen?

I noticed that there is some slop in the bearing for the output shaft and I guess I'll fix that asap.

I try to keep up on things as the old girl has 192,000 miles but some things seem to creep up on ya.

Just thought I'd ask.

vibration

Mine vibrates same way. 93 with 210,000. It seems to be in the drive line. I saw some posts where the U joints need to be parallel with each other and aligned vertically so they are on a veritcal plane. Check the posts. good luck.

Thanks guys. But I found the problem. It's the yoke on the transfer case for the rear driveline. after running loose for a while it is now sloppy on the splines of the output shaft. easy fix.

Thanks again

Mine also vibrates at high speeds. I usually only notice it WOT. Though, if I run steady at 80+mph (wich is almost never) the transfer case lever really shakes. Think its the same thing? That stupid lever also growls at me at crusing speeds, any way to silence it?

Mike

Old Smoky, sounds like you may want to crawl under and grab the drive line and give it a shake. watch to see if the yoke at the transfercase wiggles. that's how I found it on my rig. And like yours my shift handle vibrated really bad.

Time to get dirty dude.

good luck --dave--

Down & Dirty

Well, I checked yoke-play today. There was a slight amount of movement, though it didn't seem to be excessive. Now what? Maybe that is just the way it is. I think I have a little rear-end slop (well, the pickup that is). When I let out on the clutch I feel a "clunk," like slack is being taken out of the driveline, then I start to move. Also, sometimes when I pull away from a stop the transmission slightly groans. It doesn't feel like the clutch is slipping. Any ideas?

Mike

I can't give any info on the transmission as I have an auto. But as far as the 'clunk' goes I would check the 'U' bolts at the leaf springs. They might be loose.

My 1993 CTD Club Cab 4x4 250, used to vibrate at 73 mph. I replaced the u-joints on the ends of the rear drive shaft and that helped alot. Somehow I didn't notice that there was a third U-joint on that shaft for another 20,000 miles. Replacing that one pretty much cured it.

At about 218,000, the outer U-joints on the front axle failed and I found the u-joint and slip joint? bad on the front drive shaft. Truck was really tight after those were replaced.

I ended up selling the truck a few months later to get a '02 Quad Cab CTD as with the birth of a second child, we could no longer get the whole family in the '93 for camping trips.

BTW the '93 was a great truck! The Getrag 5-Speed never had any problems despite a little bombing of the engine and some heavy loads. The steering shaft failed like they all do, the locking hubs were replaced at 150K and a O-ring inside the injection pump failed at about 160K which caused a serious fuel leak. (That was fixed by a local shop for $15, though it was a job to remove the pump and put it back on. )BD

Bad Vibrations

In my old truck '93 w250 I had to change the yoke on the back of the t-case as one side was wore more than the other causing the u-joint to slide around. It did this the most at higher speeds and under accelleration. Tranfer case bolts also were loose ( after transmission replacement check them!!!!) They sheered off later pulling 15,000lbs. Also replaced splined slip yoke and all u-joints this solved problem. But not before new cv joint and front axle seal as well as speedo sensor due to loose t-case. If I could ever get a hold off the yahoo that changed the transmission I would send him a huge bill and kick his a**. Best to keep on top of bad vibrations. The shift lever quieted right down but I still keep a mitt on it to keep it completely silent.

Old Smokey,

There was a post long ago about the transfer shifter rattle, as most 1st gens do. Dodge has a part # for the fix, which is a spring washer PN 869770.

What worked for my truck was to lock hubs, put in h4 and back up a short distance. Unlock hubs and then take out of h4. The torque stress seems to cause the rattle. By backing up it releases the stress and shifter seems to fall into its rightfull place.

If i ever hear a small rattle from the shifter now i give it alittle slap down and it goes away for a long time.

Thanks for your replies guys. I did replace the U-joints on the rear drive shaft about 5,000 miles ago. I will check the trans. bolts and the U-bolts on the rear springs, as recommended, to be sure they are tight. Thanks again.

Mike

My t-case handle rattled too. It turned out to be the knob had came loose from the threaded portion on the inside and would rattle. I removed it and went to the parts store and got a 8 ball handle for it. It was either that or a "neon lighted shifter. " Give me a break I'm a readneck that drives a tall 4X4 not some riceburner, with a big spoiler!!
