high temperatures

I have been having a problem with high temperatures in both my transmission and engine when towing up a steep grade (about 10-20%) and only going about 10-20 MPH. My transmission temp. got to 230 degrees and is located on the return line. My engine temp. as measured by the stock gauge got to almost 230 degrees. Has anybody else had these kinds of problems and what have you done to eliminate or mitigate the heat? I have a 97, 4x4 automatic, and just had the transmission rebuilt. I was considering the BD torqloc or autoloc and adding the engine brake. I tow a trailer that weighs 6,500 pounds. Thanks for any suggestions.

It sort of sounds like your fan isn't locking up, like the clutch has failed. It will still spin while unlocked but not at full rpm. When the fan does lock you will know it, it makes a lot of noise and pulls 22 HP. Another cause could be insect clogged coolers.
