Well,
I finally got my car hauler out of that darn muddy field. Soon I will fetch the '55 powerwagon.

Topic of this thread is my renewed interest in the best 2wd lo range conversion kit/instructions/advice.

My renewed interest is due to my first experience towing with the JD Sach's clutch. Nothing like having the out of practice post winter trailer towing experience with a clutch that will not slip.

Finally put the rig in 4lo so I could back the monster into a narrow parking space.

SOOOOOOO... . What is best known method to convert to 2lo ?????

Thx

I'll be listening close to this one, I need it too! Wasn't hardly a problem until buying the 35' TT - now it worries me. Just looking for the best option out there.

Steve,
It was pretty funny (and scary at the same time).

I am trying to back up slowly (as with OEM clutch). Gingerly I lift the clutch to get a little traction. NOPE!! ding ding, clutch to engine room... full speed astern Naturally I instantly recalled that the new clutch would do this and I should have expected it.

I am pushing on the brake trying to slow the reverse progress whilst the trailer is swinging back and forth... . Naturally the idle speed ECM of the cummins engine has now sensed the idle is below and spec and ... . ding ding, ECM to engine room... get off your butts and bring the idle back to where it is meant to be...

So forget the brake to slow you down. Now we stop and drop the transfer case into 4low. Ah, much better... . Phewwwww.... Good thing we are still on a dirt road.....

I got it, we need a... .

Welcome to OUR world!! #ad
Reverse is DEFINATELY the biggest negative to the HP clutches! (I do believe I mentioned that to you when you called me about my clutch!!)

-Steve

Aw man, full steam reverse! A 2wd low kit is an absolute must with these types of hipo clutches when it comes to backing a trailer. Granted,I don't tow the size trailers you guys do,but I do still get the back-up hop/lurch from the clutch trying to grab.

I've had my 2 low kit for over a year, but I assembled the parts kit myself. Mine is very similar to the 2 low kits you'd get from either BD or Low Range Enterprises. I have studied both the other kits and believe you guys would be very happy with either one.

My shop manual (1999) says that the transfer case range selector rod activates a vacuum switch that sends vacuum to a front axle disconnect vacuum motor to achieve 2wd. Could you BOMB this vacuum tubing with another electrically operated switch to manually activate the front axle disconnect while in 4WD low? Just a thought...

Oh man, I was laughing so hard (and still am) at your descriptions (ding ding, clutch to engine room... full speed astern ; and ;ding ding, ECM to engine room... get off your butts and bring the idle back to where it is meant to be... ) that I forget to mention them!! You're KILLING me #ad
!! You NAILED it!

work2much,

That is axactly what the 2 low kits do... they cut off vacuum to the front axle.
You can buy a ready make kit,or assemble one of your own like I did (had all the parts at work).

-Mike

If your year is like my '97, there is a vacuum tube going along the cowl just under the rubber seal for the rear of the hood. There is a T in this line with one leg going to the vacuum switch on the transfer case. Pull off that hose and put in either an electrically operated solenoid/valve, or lines to and from a mechanical valve such as is used for an air compressor line. Wile in 2WD, interrupt the vacuum line by closing the valve. Then shift to 4WD low range. The front axle won't lock because it does not get vacuum on that side of the vacuum pot on the axle housing. Opening the valve would deliver vacuum to the pot and the front axle would lock.

BD has a complete kit to do this, using the electircal solenoid valve that their exhaust brake uses.

I had a BD 2-low kit install on the "White Obsession" at BD Dyno Days in April. This kit is a must for HP Clutches. It works great! I paid around $130. 00 Canadian installed at BD. If you have HP clutch, and need to back up a trailer, this is a must!

WHell, what is the solution for us 2wd types if we goto a hp clutch? Slipping does not appear to be an option, soooo... ... .

SOTSU!!

HO, what is that listed under? I can't find it on their site.

This is an existing thread on the topic: https://www.turbodieselregister.com/ubb//Forum4/HTML/000352.html

And yes, before someone has the satisfaction of telling me, if you review that thread you will see that I posted the schematic to my own website almost a year ago , I just spent a few minutes fixing the links on that page and moving it from my old website so it will still function... . daaaaaa

While we're on this subject, does anyone have any experience with the 4x4 Posi-Lok System?

How does this compare to the one from BD?

Thx

J. C. Whitney lists a pull cable kit to replace the vacuum setup for positive engagement of front axle under all conditions. The nice thing is that if you DON'T engage the front axle, you've now got 2 wheel low.

It's in their store section, but the only mention of it on their regular site is a press release announcing it's availability. No product pages on it.

(gotta get one myself someday)

Hey David you could either use the Donnelly save a little money system or the spend a little money system (like I have) by BD they both work well. I must have for all sensored clutches with much grab. I seem to use mine a lot. When is the next trip out to sunnyville wait until you see the new accessories on the Red Ram, I think I have gotten out of control.
