Are we "Over-revving" our engine?

My grandfather had three of them. He had over 300,000 on each of them, even though he had to drive 15 miles of bad gravel to get home. They were good cars but, They were GUTLESS

I remember a contest that Mecedes had in the late 70's or early '80's for high mileage Diesels. The winner was a salesman for the northwest, he had (documented) over 1. 2 M miles and the prize was a new 300SD. He kept the old one too... ... . Second place was somewhere over 900,000 :)

I had an 190D that had 250K. Ran fine. 40+ MPG @ 80+ MPH. :D

Sold it to the B. I. L. because it had so many miles that I was afraid to drive it anywhere.

He brought it to Mexico several times. I dont ask questions.

In 1969, when I was a young yuppie lawyer, I bought a Benz; it went 92,000---before it needed a new engine!!

I bought a '69 220D in November of that year. At about 40,000 miles it started consuming oil like crazy. By the time the engine was replaced at about 70,000, it was burning a quart in 25 miles! When the dealer notified the Factory Rep about the problem, the rep asked for the serial #, then ordered them to put in a new short block. Seems that there were a significant number of blocks that were defective and mine was among them. I loved the car, but got tired of paying through the nose for service at the dealer (Dodge/Mercedes dealership, same mechanic, more hourly rate for Mercedes service :( ), so decided to not buy MB again.

I learned on that car that there are no perfect macines, but, aside from the engine problem, it sure was a quality car.

I've seen a few cars come into work with over 400,000 miles on them. One in particular looked like new and was kept that way... . 487,000 on that one.
