Ok gauge freaks, whats your highest temp recorded on the following:

EGT

Engine water

Engine oil

5speed

6 speed (transplants)

Automatic

Rear Differential

Anyone have a gauge in the transfer case or front differential?

Any pyrometers before and after the intercooler?

What were you doing at the time, overloaded up Donner Pass, perhaps?

EGT - 1400 pre turbo

Engine water - 210

Engine oil - 200

Automatic - 180

pyrometer after the intercooler - 145

Highest temps have all been idling in traffic with the A/C on except egt and water which was on a 15% uphill tow.

egt-1050* pre

water- empty, can't say, needle moves so much have no idea for sure. Have updated Cummins t-stat to put in. Loaded- <190*

Auto- 190* (hot line) backing up trailer or driving through field in high range, dropped to 160* in low side.

EGT 1500+ preturbo.

Water: pegged.

Trans: pegged (320) Temp taken in line out of trans.

EGT was on a dyno run for a few seconds. Water and trans are what happens when your fan clutch quits and you're driving uphill through Custer National Park on a hot day. The coolant climbed and then the trans followed along, caused by the heat exchanger mounted to the side of the block.

EGT: 2000+ ask Kickin' Y2K if you need verification.

Engine water: 230

Engine oil: dunno

Automatic: 165 in heavy stop and go in this nice 110degree heat

Rear Differential dunno

Anyone have a gauge in the transfer case or front differential?

Nope

Any pyrometers before and after the intercooler? They are on the way.

EGT: 1747° (limit of SPA gauge) From a standing start, it gets there in 4 seconds. Who knows how high it's been. I did melt off the original thermocouple probe though. :)

Water temperature: buried on several occasions. The first time was pulling about 28,000 pounds up one of our local test hills on the freeway. The truck had about 370 HP at the time and I was using 90% of it during the pull. I was so focused on keeping the EGT at about 1350-1400° that I never noticed the water temp gauge until the truck died under full power. I coasted over to the side of the road and my water temp was buried and the pyro was over 900°. :(

Trans temp 320°+ (gauge pegged). I was going on vacation pulling a 5th wheel when I had a stock transmission with a Valvebody and a torque converter in it. I burnt up the overdrive clutches and the temperatures went through the roof from all the slippage.

On another occasion, I was testing intake temps on a set of twin turbos. I held 60 psi of boost, in overdrive, converter unlocked for about a mile waiting for the temperatures to stabilize.

Intake temperature (after intercooler) I've seen 220°.

Charge temperature (before intercooler) I've seen 660°.

But I've also seen 95 psi of boost where most people haven't.

Ambient Temperature

Here's another category, for what it's worth: Ambient temperature.

Highest air temperature I've operated in: 132F, as measured by the cab's factory thermometer. Truck was new, and I was towing a 19 foot TT on flat ground near Lake Havasu, AZ. Coolant temperature was 200F.

Three days earlier, I pulled the rig up a desert pass at 125F ambient, with coolant temperature peaking at 210.

A year later, pulling 27 foot TT from Spirit Mountain to Flagstaff, 105F outside, coolant peaked at 210.

Air conditioning ON in all cases, set for passenger comfort. This was long before I installed EGT guage.

Compressor out temperature 327*F

Intake air temperature 108. 6*F

OAT 85*F

HX40 at 24 psi (boost)

Engine oil temperature 212*F
