Now could you just imagine the size of our trucks if we had that engine :D :D

Also watched the program, thought it was interesting the mech could take a single cylinder off line for maintenance without shutting down the engine

Being in the Coast Guard, I have seen some of the big ones. A new Hapag Lloyd ship came in from Germany last year. She was 940 feet long and the engine was an in line 10 cylinder 45,000 BHP engine. Valves were the diameter of a basketball and the pistons looked like about 4 ' in diameter. They carried spare valves, two cylinders and two pistons. The prop shaft looked to be about 36" in diameter. She was a two cycle direct drive. That means no "transmission". To go forward, set the lever on forward and air start with compressed air injected into the cylinders to start it turning over. Once it reaches about 20 rpms, fuel is added and it starts. To go in reverse, stop the engine, set lever for reverse and crank. They burn Bunker C which is like tar until heated to 200*F. Max speed on the engine was 300 rpms. Cruise was about 180 rpms turning a 24' prop. The rudder was 90,000 lbs. The flywheel was about 30 tons. She was running twin turbos, each with a turbine housing over 8 feet in diameter. They add lube oil by the 55 gallon drum.

Alan that's some cool information!

Hey I see you reside in Kathleen GA! I used to live between Kathleen and Bonaire on Hwy 247, just a block down the hill from Beaver Creed Road. We had 7 acres on the east side of the highway that extended down to the creek. Used to mess around with dirtbikes and go-carts when I lived there. It was 1979-82 and I was about 14 years old then. The railroad tracks across the highway were a lot of fun too!

I went to Warner Robins Jr. High those years.

Chris, If you are ever down this way, I live off Houston Lake Road. We are now surrounded by Warner Robins. I'm missing the big ships and the ocean right now.

Alan I haven't been down your way in years! I'm sure it's changed a bit. :p

I'd love to visit and check out the places that I used to frequent. If I wind up down your way I'll be sure and send you a message. Sometimes when I roadtrip, I happen to make a detour down that way for a couple hours. Right now no plans to be in your area. Thanks though!

To stay on 'topic' here are a few links of interest:

Anyone know if this show will be on again?

I searched frantically through the Guide on my TV after reading this thread. Alas, couldn't find it. I assume they'll play it again eventually, someday. :(
