RV Warrenty

We recently purchased our first towing vehicle, a '95 Ram 2500 (we have 30 years of experience towing horses, but w/ other people's vehicles). Came w/ hitch installed... for all I know it could have come from the factory that way back in '95 (the hitch is definitely not shiney-new). I'd like to know for sure what class it is, but I cannot find a plate or stamping anywhere on the hitch. Does anyone know if there are any obvious structural characteristics that define Class 3 & 4 hitches and distinguish them from the toys? Bought the truck from a dealer, so can't ask the old owner.

Differences can range from just the weight of the material used to very differenct design changes like added plates and gussets around the reciever tube. Most class 4's will mount longer on the frame so the weight is distributed towards the axle more.

Without being there I can only guess what you have but if there is any doubt them you should stop by a hitch place and take a look at the differences or just throw it away and step up to a 4 or even 5 so you know your family and furry friends are safe.

Thanks for the responses. Close inspection revealed that someone had spray-painted the hitch, painting right over the spec plate. A little mineral spirits and elbow grease revealed the specs... its a Class III.
