What are the signs of identifing a 24 valve HO? Is there a number in the VIN, something on the block... From what I understand the HO started in 2000 and only comes with a 6-speed but a local dealer has '99 with a 6-speed and claims that the engine is an HO.

The HO was officially introduced in 2001. I think there are a few 2000's out there but the official debut was 2001. Yes it was only available with 6 speed, but the 6 speed was available (although unusual) in 99. I would suspect that the truck is just a SO with the 6 speed.

On the phone the salesman was really hyping the fact that it had the HO engine. I knew that it was not in production in '99 but I thought maybe he knew something I did not.

Thanks for the reply gang!

An HO quad cab 2500 would have the numbers 237 on the vin. A non HO would be 236. The above numbers are the 6th, 7th, and 8th numbers. The 8th number tells you if its an HO or not. So an HO has a 7 on the 8th number of the vin. Allthough I have seen some "C"s on the 8th number of HOs.

look at the hp rating on the motor the cpl tag or emissions tag whatever you call it . I think the HO were 245 horse and the SO are 235 horse.
