Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) HO or not.

What constitutes a High Output engine? What is different about that engine and a non-HO engine? And if there are no manuals with the truck, how do I find out if it is a HO engine? It's not for my truck(in case you see my signature). It's for a 1999 Cummins.

High output (ETH) motor was not available until 2001.

Another easy way to tell-

they only come with a 6-speed manual. And if your still not sure, look on the engine ID tag located on the front (driver side) of the engine, it will read... 245hp.

Eighth digit of VIN will be a seven for the HO.

In the 2002 FSM the 8th digit is either a "6" for the standard ETC engine or a "C" for the HO/ETH engine. Maybe the designation for the 2001's is different

The 1999 and 2000 trucks with the 6-speed are not HO . . . standard 235hp. (which you could surmise from fj40charles' reply)

That's interesting, Phil. My manual states what is shown over at Fritz' site : http://dodgeram.org/tech/specs/VIN_decode.htm



I thought that the "C" was used for '94 to '97 trucks? Looks like another change for the '02.

No! But you can call it an H. O. T. (for H. O. Toaster)

What I meant was..

The engine option was ONLY offered with a six-speed. Not that all six-speeds were HO's

"What is the High Output Cummins Engine? What changes were made to the HO engine?





The High Output Cummins engine is a new rating launched in January 2000 for the Dodge Ram. It produces 245hp and 505 lb. -ft torque. To create and handle the high output the rating this engine has different components:



Controls: new software instructing fuel pump to deliver more fuel.

Fuel System: VP44 fuel pump components changed to allow for increased fuel delivery.

Injectors: Changed to allow for increased fuel delivery.

Pistons: New design for higher 17:1 compression ratio-

Head: powdered metal valve seat inserts for improved Durability.

Flywheel: larger to match to larger diameter clutch for handling higher torque output. "
