This might have been covered already but, if so, I couldn't find it.

Does anyone know what's actually different between the HO and the Standard Output? Is it simply a different fueling curve or is there actual hardware differences?

My though is that I know I'm eventually going to BOMB an 03 but I'm wondering if the HO is a better "platform" to start from or is just a waste of money upfront for something I'll be replacing anyway (like a chip).

PCline, that's a good question and I hope someone has some input regarding the second part of your post.

I thought I saw a post that gave a link to a picture of the fuel injectors for the '03 engine, broken down. It was commented that the possibilty was there to "bomb" the injectors. Maybe it is in the hardware.

I've read that it's both fueling curve and hardware. I've read the pistons are different on the '03 HO, something to do with better oiling. I've also read that unlike the old HO, the compression ratios are the same in the HO and standard. So in those respects, the HO might actually be a pro instead of a "con".

Personally, I gave this a lot of thought when ordering my new truck. I'm going from a HO 6 speed to a standard automatic. I figure I'll be a little disappointed at first. But I wanted an automatic, and wanted a truck now. I also figured that the standard can be bombed no problem, and I also like that the 47RE is a known quantity and can be beefed up with today's knowledge. The future 48RE for the HO is good on paper, but who knows how durable it will really be. I haven't done the numbers either (because pricing for a HO/automatic isn't available AFAIK), but the savings will probably go a long way towards beefing up my 47RE.

Just my thoughts, I've spent a lot of time thinking about the subject. Hope I'm right, it's too late to change my order. :D

I would like to know more about the differences between the HO and SO. From these posts it seems like an HO would be the wiser choice, with more HP capability, and longevity.

I drove a standard output yesterday. 2x4 dually. It was so SLOW

I could barely pull 65 uphill. I love the new truck but for me I will go with the HO. I talked to Kieth at Diesel Dynamics and he said that they were waiting for their new truck. It will get upgraded with injectors, Box and Turbo. Prolly exhaust too. The injectors are shown on their website. $2400 was the price quote. But they aren't sure yet what the real price is. He said something about an exchang(same day) for upgrade but didn't know what that would cost. Lawrence was in the background saying next week they could do it. I am waiting for a 6speed and HO. Local dealer said June.

Have you guys read the article I wrote back in February from the press launch? I grilled the engineers for nearly two hours to get lots of answers to questions like this. Here's the link https://www.turbodieselregister.com/hdlaunch/hdlaunch.htm . To directly answer this question taken from the article - "The increased 305 hp rating is achieved via a programming change. There may be uprated engine control modules available in the future to give the higher output to the standard engine. "

That means that either the HO doesn't have the J jets for oiling the underside of the pistons, or both the ETC and ETH do. Here's hoping for the latter.

That's good news. I was hoping that would be the case.

Now I feel comfortable getting the Standard output with the 47RE transmission. A little Bombing on both and it should easily outrun the HO/48RE combination. Might cost a little more but at least I can do it as money allows.

I have to agree with Muench's comment about the 47RE in his first post, "the 47RE is a known quantity and can be beefed up with today's knowledge. The future 48RE for the HO is good on paper, but who knows how durable it will really be. "

Besides, we all know a bombed truck is better than factory :D

I'm just repeating what the factory rep was saying during the seminar at the rally in Colombus concerning the jets. That in no way precludes that the difference in power output is 100% due to programing. Also, as I posted somewhere else, the tour guide(different person) was asked by someone about the weight, and he pulled out his cheat sheet, and the the weights for the two versions were listed as slightly different. Sorry I can't quote the numbers - both were 1000lb. and change. BTW the guide said they wanted to reduce weight but that didn't happen on the way to meeting other goals.

Yes I read the article as soon as it was posted. Best info anywhere at the time and maybe still.

PCLine, I would say you made the right call. I would rather go with the standard output Auto and use the $$ between it and the HO/Auto coming soon and BOMB it right. I am sure that option is very expensive. Who knows what you can do with the HO Auto coming out but we all know we have 3 vendors that can build a killer, bullet-proof automatic out of the SO version

That is great to see DD (and Banks) are right on top of this new motor.

Since the upcoming 48re is just an internally beefed up 47re(if I recall correctly), hopefully the converters, etc, fit the 48re, so people can bombproof the transmission when its released. :D

Steve,

In your article you indicated that the 305/555 engine is not avaliable in CA. Will it be in 2004. 5? Is there any way to get one if I live here? Thanks, Greg Boardman

They said it would be available in CA when the EGR version is out which would be '04. 5. There's a post on here somewhere recently about getting a non California truck in California. Basically it involved one of two things. Setting up residency in a different state, registering it there and then re-registering it in CA later. Or having a friend or family member from out of state buy it, register it in their state, then selling it to you used and you registering it in CA (this option requires you to pay more taxes and if you're financing it, you'd be financing it as a used vehicle). Both are PITA options IMO.
