If it is recommended, then its probably best to use it. Engineers, chemists and metallurgists do their jobs pretty well so i'll take their advice. A wise man learns from others mistakes, a dumb man learns from his own.

Just received the following response back from John Deere about their coolant and Chrysler specs. Looks like it is an acceptable alternative for 3rd gens.

Gary Owens,

Sorry for the delay in the response. I have been working with the group that develops coolants and lubricants at John Deere and I have received an answer pertaining to Cool-Gard II antifreeze in a Cummins diesel.

The response I was sent stated that John Deere Cool-Gard II would meet the performance requirements of specification MS9769. The response also stated that Cool-Gard II antifreeze is compatible with the coolants Chrysler is currently using.

Thank You.

Thr reply from John Deere is timely as I am heading to the dealer now to buy some Cool Gard. Thanks to all who voiced their opinions/personal findings. This will make for a much simplier maintenance routine for us.

I wish I had seen this thread earlier as I have been through this already. The product that I use for the HOAT 50/50 mix is Shell Rotella ELC. It is readily available and matches the Dodge spec. I had a cold leak and lost a bit of coolant the first winter and would not add any until I found an exact match that was 50/50. Involved my lubricant distributor and we figured it out.

See my attachment for a fairly simple explanation of the currect antifreeze technology.

I hope that this will help someone in the future.

... So, like Bill Stockard, I put the old antifreeze back in and saved the new for later. I had bought G-05 to use as a replacement. I poured the old fluid through a paint filter and got a couple of bits of dirt from it. I didn't change out the hoses either.

For the record, I didn't pour the old antifreeze back in. :) I poured in new Mopar G-05 combined with distilled water in a 50/50 mix. The six year old anitfreeze appeared just as bright and clean as the new antifreeze I poured in.

1 - Because it was still good. 2 - I did't think it was that hard to drain. 3 - The new stuff was expensive (at least to me) and I'll use it eventually.

In 2004 I abandoned the HOAT and moved to Fleetguard Compleat propylene glycol.

I like JHardwick's philosophy, and it has certainly served him well.
