2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Hole in exhaust manifold!

On the way home from easter dinner at the parents, my truck sounded like it had a huge exhaust leak. So when i got home i crawled all the up and down over the exhaust i noticed i little soot on the bottom side on the manifold. It is right below the egt probe, it looks like someone screwed a screw in then took it out. I know thats not what happened but is it possible that the probe was hitting the bottom and did this? My dodge dealer installed the gauges and so they are looking at it in the morning. Does anyone know that if they change the manifold if they will let me buy a ats manifold instead of the factory one? Think I remember checking out the dealer price of a stock manifold and it was very close to the ATS. It would be worth a try.



As an option, I have a perfect condition 2001. 5 stock manifold with ~20K on it, and drilled for a pyro all boxed up. PM me if interested.

It sounds more like they drilled all the way through! That probe is no where near strong enough to break the manifold.

Thanks 24V-DSL, I will keep that in mind if for some reason its not covered under the warranty and i have to pick up the tab. I have had the probe in the manifold for roughly 50k and this is the first problem since they installed it. This is exactly why i had them do the installation, now my butt is covered by their warranty of labor and workmanship, and since i have a good dealer i don't see there being a problem with warranty.

you could always drill for a pipe plug (1/8-1/4 or what suits your hole size. JB

Well i just got the truck back from the dealer, they put a new manifold on and called it good. They also told me the reason why the hole was there is that when they originally drilled the hole when they installed it they went all the way through it. So they used a pipe plug and called it good, and didn't say anything to me about it. The pipe plug came out and that was the hole and they took care of the bill since they caused all this.

I'm glade to see more posts about the stand up dealers out there. It sounds like you got your self a stand up dealer there.

They made a mistake during the install and fixed it the same way I would have, and the best part is they did not hemmi haul around about fixing it. They broke it they fixed it and the fix failed and then they got you a new one. Can't beat that.

How the heck could they drill thru the whole manifold? It's not like drilling a piece of sheet metal and having the bit pop thru the other side. Only way I can figure is that they drilled in the center where the divider is and didn't know how deep they were. That's a lot of drilling in cast iron! The right way is to drill off center for the probe, to avoid the center divider. Or did they drill it off the truck and drill the first hole on the wrong side???



As far as the 'stand up dealer' goes; no way I can agree with that. This dealer, or at least his shop can't be trusted. They screwed up the job, hid the mistake, and figured that CoreyCunningham would never discover the mistake.



I agree that the fix (plugging with a pipe plug) for the mistake was one that many of us would find acceptable, but the service dept. should of owned up the the mistake and let CoreyCunningham decide what was right. At the very least admit the error, disclose the fix, and guarantee the job for the life of the engine. This dealer doesn't get any points from me for getting caught in a lie!



It is nice that they fixed it without a fight. What did they do to compensate you for the aggravation and time?

They replaced it. No hassle. They didn't fight or argue it was replaced. And on the other hand if I were going to have a dealer install my equipment after I paid them all the money they want I sure as hell would check my equipment to make sure it was up to par. I don't know about you but it is very EASY to drill through the cast manifold in these trucks. I drilled the hole in my manifold in about 5 seconds.

Well the bottom line is if you take you truck to the dealer and have work done on CHECK IT WHEN YOU GET IT BACK.

I was just saying that they admitted to it and replaced it with no hassle. What do you want? Do want to go and fight with the dealer before they replace it? Do you want to have to call DC and fight with them to get it replaced?:-{} :-{}

I know I don't. The dealer honored the warranty on the work and admitted to the screw up, yeah maybe they should have told CoreyCunningham that they screwed up but they didn't. The bottom line is

WHEN YOU GET YOUR TRUCK BACK FROM THE DEALER MAKE SURE THAT WHAT YOU PAY FOR IS DONE RIGHT.

How Many other dealers do you know of that would have admitted to messing up the job, or replaced it that easy,or would have even honored the grantee or work warranty after 50k miles?

I'm pretty sure they did drill down the center, because it was in the center of the manifold collection area before the turbo, so you are right on with that. However they didn't let me know when it originally happen and that did kind of ****** me off but its easy to get over it when they have warrantied my truck with the tcase and other little things with having a chip and 120 horse injectors. So im not complaining to much, however they did give me a dodge cap for the problem. When i had the guages installed around 20k i thought i had a good service provider but he didn't tell me, and now hes gone and now i have a new service advisor and hes ok. I asked why it happened and he told me not lie with him, the new probe is off centered and towards the back side of the engine, so i think they noticed the problem and put it in the right place this time. I usually check the work and it all seemed right, this is my first diesel with guages so i wasen't exactly sure where it was supposed to go, i just knew the general direction.
