Just a thought that popped into my head, which turned into questions.

1) Is an Holset HE351 turbo more efficient or make more power than an Holset HX35W?

2) Can you retrofit an Holset HE351 turbo in a 2nd Gen HO 24v truck, or are there ECM issues to deal with?

3) If yes to question #2, would there be an advantage to installing aforementioned turbo over an aftermarket turbo?

4) Rather than bother putting in a new turbo, is there a 4" downtube that you can put on an HX-35W, rather than the stock 3. 5"?

Just thinking about exhaust down the road. That, and I have too much time on my hands.

Thanks for the replies.

I don't know enough about the HE351 to compare, but<, I can tell you that there is a 4" downtube for your '01. I had looked at for a year before I bought it, and, when I did put it on, it allows the turbo to spool faster and keep the egts down 50-150 compared to the stock downtube. The part is from Banks, it's their elbow (not the brake, but the outer shell that the brake uses) It bolts directly to the back of the turbo, opens it up to 4", and comes with the 4" downtube. The drawback is that it costs 300-350 ( I can't remember exactly, but its in that range). If you decide to go that route, call Banks directly and order instead of going to a parts store, I think I got mine about $25 cheaper that way.

I know you don't want to hear this, but I bought that same brake and saw how restrictive it was and turned around and sold it to a friend to get this banks elbow. Now, my friend wants to take that brake off ( because of the heat and how restrictiveness) and he hasn't decided to go with the banks brake or the elbow. You would be surprised how much restriction is in the factory brake and elbow, I didn't know until my friend and I were looking at the stock elbow and the banks. To add an interesting twist, my friend took my stock elbow because the factory brake "looks" more restrictive than the stock elbow.

Well, that's a moot point for me... . I'm not blowing a crapload of cash, especially on a Banks product (I have issues with them), when I already have a product that has worked for me quite well. The initial question still stands, however I guess with modification:

1) Will the HE351 turbo work in a 2nd Gen application?

2) If the answer to #1 is yes, will the factory 2nd Gen Jacobs exhaust brake bolt to the HE351 turbo?

3) Does it make monetary sense to get the HE351 vice popular aftermarket turbos?

4) Will 4" exhaust fit the factory Jacobs exhaust brake, or do I need a part to make it fit?

The reason I ask these questions is because I absolutely loved the power that my '05 put out.

If you ask me why I got rid of the '05, there were a few reasons, but the main reason was because my temper comes back to haunt me sometimes. In this case, getting the '01 worked out well; it had all the features I was looking for, but I do miss the four doors for the kids.

What is an HE-351 turbocharger? What is it's original application? What size exhaust housing does it come with and what size is the outlet? How big is the compressor?

If you can answer these questions then these guys can help you.

Also, the best turbo for your application has already been built and is for sale by a number of vendors. If this HE-351 was among them, it would have been heard of by now. BUT..... if this is something you already have on hand, we would love to see a picture of it. But it will be hard to out perform some of these new hybrids.
