My turbo is starting to a little oil in side by the fins so I am looking in to getting a new one. My question is this I am not sure which one I have. I am still learning about these diesels. I have located a new holset HX40W turbocharger for $400. 00. Is this a good price will it fit my 96, is it larger than the stock one. Please give advice.

They're not all the same. There is something like 22 different models of the HX40, so you may want to get all the numbers you can find on the tag and call Piers. Yes, the HX40 is much bigger than the (stock) HX35.

When installing an HX40 (it has a 4" outlet as opposed to a 3" outlet), the down pipe is not the same... the 3" bolts on with 2 bolts to the exhaust housing, the 4" style butts against the exhaust housing and it band-clamps to the exhaust housing. There is a down pipe made especially for this swap.

I have the same truck, same lift, same color. All I can say is;

1. 37" Swampers will fit without fender trimming;

2. Swap out that #6 plate for a #4. Push it back a few thousandths. If you're planning on a DTT trans, you'll thank yourself for the #4 later.

3. Call Bill K. He can walk you through some vb mods that'll hold everything together until you come up with the $$$ for the DTT stuff

4. The #4 with the 3K GSK will break those 37's loose on dry pavement.

If you're married, and your wife is anything like mine, don't take her on the test drive. She'll never ride with you again. I kept hearing "Why do you have to drive this fast in a truck this big?"... ...

You'll already be making much more power than the stock trans can handle, so save your money for the DTT stuff before you go for a bigger turbo... . My . 02 worth... .

Forgot something......

Don't overlook the obvious..... I have a K&N in my truck. The oil on the impellor vanes might be from your air filter. I'd check that first. If you saturate 'em and don't let 'em sit for a while they do that. I oil my filter and let it sit on a buch of paper towels for about an hour after I oil it. Then I wipe off the excess and pop it in.....

Hope this helps. I'd hate to see you spend $400-600 to replace something that aint broke... .

Micah:

As the other members told you check with Piers

Harry at "Piers Diesel Research" to see if that

is the right turbo. If it is, that is a good price!

However, the "stock" HX-40 I had did have some

"lag" on the bottom end. Piers can do his

"modifications" to that tubo and make it work

REAL WELL!! I just got mine back on about

two months ago and it works GREAT!!! No lag

and excellent spool-up!

Good luck!
