i put 5 inch into a six inch single stack. yes i said six inch. is there such a thing as not enough back pressure on a 12 valve. it does not seem to be as loud and the egts are deffinetly lower. just wondering. thank you
I have dual 6 inchers and they are MUCH quieter and less raspy than my friend's 02 with a 3. 5" straight pipe. I think the smaller the pipe the louder it is, because the sound bounces off the walls of the pipe more frequently. Just my theory.
Lack of backpressure comes into play in an NA engine but never the case on a turbocharged engine..... (usually)the lower the drive pressure and (always) post turbine pressure the better
I don't see how going from a full 5" to a 6" (after the DP) is going to do anything for backpressure and EGT's on a mildly modded truck
especially when you have a 4" DP... ..... the closer to the turbine the more of size makes a difference, because the farther the exhaust travels the more it contracts and cools ... ... ... requiring a smaller pipe cross section
an exhaust with a 5" DP going to a 4" back >>>> an exhaust with a 4" DP going to a 5" back
the tiny turbine discharge on the stock HX does nothing good for anyone
I had 4" into dual 5" stacks on a 97 and it wasn't very noisy even when towing. On the 97 I have now I put 5" (after the dp) into dual 6's and it was so loud towing you couldn't here the radio or carry on a conversation. I put a full flow type muffler on it and I also bought the stack mufflers and it's still really load towing. I put the exact same set-up (only with a 5' dp) on my 06 and it sounds great. It has a soft deep tone to it. I'm going to try a different muffler on my 12v to try to quiet it down.
Ive tried quite a few situations to remedy resonance. One thing I noticed is my slider rear window had less resonance than my new non-slider rear (broke the rear slider).
Another thing I recently noticed that made a major difference is the turbine housing. Going from a 12 to a 14 to a 16 on the hx 35 made minimal difference, and straight 4' made minimal difference... but going to a turbonetics turbo with a huge turbine and 4" outlet made it drone like never before.
For those trying to fight 'the drone', remember when you stick on a new resonator / muffler to give it a few hundred miles to soot up properly. That will greatly change the tone in my experience. I've seen people say such and such mufflers are no good and still drone, when they only ran it for 15 miles before buying a different name brand.
