Home made splash guards

I am wanting to manufacture a towing splash guard for protecting my 5th wheel and was looking for anyone that has made their own to get some ideas. Any help would be appreciated. I was planning on welding two strips of angle to removable receiver hitch. Getting the reinforced rubber is the problem. Looking for ideas!!

Camping World has a kit you can buy that is two pieces of angle about 4 feet long with hard plastic mounted to it that the plastic is about 4"x24". Each piece is overlapping to give it stength and also is flexible. I have an aluminum 2'x4' box mounted on my receiver hitch for carrying coolers that I screwed the two pieces of angle to the bottom of the box and the plastic hangs straight down deflecting stones and PowerStrokes that I run over.

Something I've seen people do it screw diamond plate on the front of the camper.

Stone quarry!!

Go to a stone quarry or a gravel pit. They replace the rubber conveyer belts as they wear out and you can usually cut out some nice sections from their waste. Watch out for snakes in the mats if he does not warn you! I use the 36" & 48" wide, 1/2" & 3/4" thick for rubber stall mats for my horse stalls and run in areas. Cuts down on erosion!

Find a truck supply in your area, not our trucks but semis, I just bought two 24 by 36 rubber mudflaps for 6 bucks each new. they are about 3/8 thick and quite strudy.

I built my own. If I had it to do over I definitely would go with Enkay Rock Tamers. Look at them at MrTruck.com Price of $ 229 is a bargain for the quality. RC Oo. Oo.

the biggest mess on my 5er is always soot from the exhaust pipe (and its a stock truck!). Wonder if a turndown would make a difference? Probably not

See the last photo in my gallery under Old Grey Mule for my full-width rock guard. It worked like a champ, even on the severe gravel roads they call the Dempster and the Dalton.



The problem now is that the really thick rubber piece I used is no longer available - it was a Ultra-Guard or somesuch for pickups from Camping World. You could use a thrown-away conveyer belt or something; cut it to the right dimensions.



Don't put it on till you need it and take it off when you're coming out; it decreases mpg by about 1. 0 at normal low highway speeds on the Alcan. It's a real drag with that stiff rubber.
