Homelink -- Does it work if key is not in ignition?

I was just about to program this gadget, and then wondered,

Does it work only when the key is in the ignition, or anytime?



I am hoping it only works when the key is in the ignition, because

then it is more of a security feature.



If it works without the key, I'm better off hiding the remote somewhere...

I kinda thought that was the deal.

I wonder if it can be made to function with the key in the ignition?

Or does it have a volatile memory, i. e. if battery is disconnected, does it have

to be reprogrammed?
