Has anyone here pieced together and installed their own dual stack kit? I can probably get everything I would need out of our Nelson catalog at work at cost, so I'm thinking it should be cheaper than buying a kit from some where. Also, I'd like to do something a little different and bring my stacks up on either side of my third brake light instead of the outer corners of the bed. I've seen a few trucks like this in the magazines and really like it, but I've never seen a pic of the in bed tubing to see how they do it. Do I need to fab a box up to mount the stacks in, or do you think I could do with with a "y" pipe coming up thru the bed for the pass. side stack and a 90* elbow coming out of that for the driver side? I'm not sure if the elbow will come up to the same height as the y pipe. I'd like to go with 5" tubing and 6" mitre cut stacks. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

nice job SPUNKY! AFOULK: be carefull with the placement of the y pipe as the exhaust will run the easiest path first and you may only get smoke from 1 stack.

Yeah, I made my own stacks. Did the BigBadDodge style black engine paint 'cause they were all rusty. Dude was heading to the scrap pile with a Y pipe, 2 turnouts, 3 peices of Flex pipe, a chrome elbow and 4 clamps all hooked together from under a Peterbuilt or something.

Whoooaaa, there, Pilgrim! Gave him a 10 spot and he was thrilled to death.

Total cost was $45. 00 on some more clamps and ceramic paint.

I screwed up cutting off the turnouts, I favor miter cuts, but it ain't bad for under $50. 00 bucks.

Has anyone mounted their stacks closer to the center of the bed though? I'd really like to see how guys have done it. I've only seen pics of trucks like this from the top of the bed up, but i've never seen pics of the in bed tubing.

that's how all the popular aftermarket kits are designed... which is part of why I don't use them...

building your own setup and having it turn out really nice takes more time and money than buying an aftermarket kit, but you end up with a nicer setup for sure

What you say is VERY true... but what you can't see in my "Y-pipe" is that there is a splitter plate inside of it to EQUALLY divide the exhaust side to side, because uneven smoke is just NOT acceptable to me!!! and YES, building your own is more time consuming, I have over 30 hours of JUST labor alone in building my set.

I don't doubt it, very nice looking stacks!!!!

I don't like the SLIGHT/undetectable lag between the time the pass side and driver's side start smoking. I put my splitter one rib off center and cut a tight 90* bend and make a compound bend to get down to the exhaust. probably more restrictive, but it's about as perfect as you can get on having them smoke at exactly the same time. the splitter is KEY for making sure you have the same amount of smoke out of each stack!!!

The sound is kinda why I was leaning away from making a box. How hard would it be to bring my exhaust up thru the center of the bed? Atleast this way I can use a splitter with a plate in the center of it to get even smoke out of the stacks. I was gonna come up thru the bed where the big name stack kits usually do and use a "wye" pipe (straight piece with 90* elbow coming out the side of it making more of a "T" than anything) but I think most of the smoke will come out my pass. side stack. I was gonna use this and then a 90* elbow for the driver side stack, with piece of straight tubing between the elbow and "wye" pipe to bring it over to the other side of the third brake light if need be, but maybe the splitter with 2 90* elbows would be a better idea.
