ATN Scopes?

I'm going to help my oldest daughter (23) get a new car and have been looking at Honda cars on the internet. So far all the people I know that have one or have had one has been satisfied with it's performance. I have never owned one myself, but have owned a couple Toyota pickups and like them. I'm not really interested in a hybrid. She my daughter likes the Mitsubishi Eclipse, and so I ask my mechanic friend about those and he said stay away in his opinion, but also he gave the Honda a good review. Any one with a Civic or Accord out there and your review on either. Oo.

Tony

I have a 2004 Honda Civic LX 5 Spd (ps, pb, ac, cc, pw, pdl, am/fm/cd). I use it for our daily driver/commuter car along with my motorcycle. The Cummins stays parked the majority of the week. The Civic is very reliable... change oil and that's about it. I haven't had a single problem but it's only got 25k on it so far. You really can't go wrong. Of course, I can say all the same things about the Toyota Corolla we had before the Civic. But the thing about the civic, it will have a higher resale on down the line. That pushed me over the edge in choosing it over the others.

We've had a 2003 Accord for 30,000 miles. No problems to speak of. My daughter has had a Civic for about 6 years and has beat the crap out of it (accidents, break-ins, etc. ) , but still in good mechanical condition.

Wife bought an Accord EX new in '92. Daughter inherited it in '00. Currently has 175k HARD miles on it- biggest problem has been the A/C. Wife currently has about 55k on her '03 CR-V.

When it comes to passenger cars, it's Honda & Toyota, and then everything else!

I want a 3/4 ton Honda with a Cummins in it! ;-)

I generally consider Honda to be of exceptional quality and reliability, and don't hesitate to recommend them to anyone. I will probably purchase an Accord within the next couple years (I think the Accord is the best vehicle in its class in North America). When I married my wife she came with a free 2002 Civic EX coupe. Here are the repairs it's required:

-Leaking sunroof seal

-Failed alternator, which took out the battery

-Failed gas tank vapor solenoid

-Failed A/C compressor

Of those problems, I think the alternator *might* have been my fault, since it failed immediately after I washed the engine down (never again  ). My biggest complaint with the vehicle is that it's not able to detect an overvoltage condition from the charging system. That specifically caused the battery to burn out prematurely before I could properly diagnose the failed voltage regulator in the alternator. It also *nearly* caused burned out SRS and ABS modules ($$$). I consider this a serious flaw in the Civic's design. Not to mention the price on a Honda rebuilt alternator - $365. REBUILT, NOT NEW! Highway robbery. #@$%!

Oh, I almost forgot; the alternator doesn't develop enough current to run all the vehicle electrical components simultaneously. I know because I tested it thoroughly when I replaced it. At idle with the A/C, wipers, headlamps, rear defrost, and radio on the alternator is not keeping up and you're draining your battery. It's easy to be in that situation around here in the winter (defrost automatically activates A/C). At highway RPM (3k) with all those accessories, I figure the alternator is just keeping up with the electrical demand. Bottom line: I think the vehicle's charging system is seriously flawed. I believe the alternator is a 60 amp unit (ironically, a brand new 136 amp unit for my truck runs <$150  ). The issue could be solved with a 75 or 90 amp alternator, but the vehicle is built to the "just enough, and no more" principle. Knowing what I know now, I hesitate to install the heated seats my wife's been asking for (why she needs heated seats is beyond me... the engine's up to temperature in less than 1 mile... I've measured it).

I don't like the automatic transmission on the car. I've never had any problems with it, but it doesn't have a traditional pan (so I don't know how the heck I'm going to change the fluid) and hills seem to confuse it. It occassionally "hunts" for the right gear in hilly areas, and I think it lugs the engine too much before upshifting on a hill. It does have a neat engine braking algorithm in it that seems to kick in as a function of speed, gear, brake pressure, and deceleration rate. Neat feature!

I hate the fact that you can't change transmission gears without putting the key in and turning it to "RUN". What's worse is you can't remove the key unless the transmission is in "PARK" (c'mon, what about neutral?). Maybe all modern automatics are like this.

I hate the fact that there's no "ACCESSORY" detent on the ignition switch. If you want to roll down the windows with the engine off, you have to turn the key to "RUN", which also turns on everything in the vehicle (radiator fan and fuel pump, for instance). Very annoying.

The Civic is very noisy on the road at highway speeds. Traveling over bridges and concrete road sections quickly becomes infuriating. Over joints in the road it sounds like you're riding on 4 basketballs. I don't fault the car for this though, as it's an economy car so it's not meant to have a quiet highway ride. The Accord is much quieter. The corolla suffers from the same problems (as do all economy cars, in my opinion).

Having said that, I still consider the Civic a great car. The A/C compressor and the sunroof were repaired under warranty. Honda service is outstanding (at least it is at the dealers around here)... makes Dodge service seem worse than a root canal.

Unfortunately, I think the new generation civic (2006-up) are really ugly (at least in pictures), but that's a personal issue! I recommend it over the Corolla, because I think it has better value.

My father in law has an Accord with >120k on it, and a co-worker had an Accord with >165K on it when he traded it. Both vehicles were remarkably problem free over their lifetime. They were (are) both pre-2001 Accords. One with an automatic, the other with a 5-speed.

I do think that the 4th generation (pre-2001) Civics and Accords (2001 is when they underwent redesign) are of superior build quality and reliability than 5th generation (2001-up) Civics and Accords. A friend is an engineer for them and he agrees with this assessment. I don't know about the 6th generation (2006-up) Civics.

Now, if you asked my wife what she thinks of the car, she'd say "I LOVE IT! BEST CAR EVER!". But she's not a car nut like I am. ;)

Gets good fuel mileage, but I can't quote any actual numbers as I don't bother keeping a log on her car.

That's my story!

Thanks so far guys for all the good information, and Ryan reminded me at the end of the term to give you a extra gold star for your report :-laf . Seriously thanks a lot.

My wife really likes the Accords best, and I do to, but they are somewhat more pricey than what our budget allows for at this time. Although I'm looking at both models new and used certified with in a couple years old. :D

What can I say, I'm a car nut and I'm loaded with opinions about them! :-laf

I might be wrong about the 2006 Civic being ugly... I think I saw a TV commercial for them yesteday and they didn't seem to look too bad.

You just can't go wrong with a Honda car (or probably Toyota, either).

Love mine

I own a 2005 Accord Lx and it is a wonderful car. Hate to say it but the fit and finish is much better than any other car I ever owned. Does everything it is supposed to do and does not leave me worried about its reliability. Excellent choice ;)

I've had a 1999 Civic Si (the 8000 RPM DOHC V-tec version) and currently have a 2003 Acura 3. 2 TL-S as a commuter car. I keep the oil changed and drive them. The Acura's battery failed the cold cranking amperage test at the last service, so I changed it out. That's it - sum total of problems.

Well changing the original post somewhat, tomorrow we are going to look at the Toyota Corolla. I talked to a co-worker a couple days ago about his 05 Corolla, and his reply was nothing negative, he and his wife really like it. So we are going to check them out also.

Tony

The Toyota dealer only had one Corolla in stock, and it was not what we was looking for, so a few miles down the road to the Honda dealership we arrived to a new shipment of Honda Civics that had just come in. We spent most of the late morning and afternoon haggling on price, but after it was said an done my daughter drove away with a silver 2006 Honda Civic EX Coupe pretty well loaded.

Man are those things popular, the car was just outside the salesman office window while I counted at least ten people walk up to it giving it a good look over. Two salesmen interrupted our saleman looking for the keys to show it to other customers, and was told by our salesman "it's already sold to these customers".

I believe when the time comes for my wifes vehicle to be traded the Accord or Civic will be our first ones to check out.

Tony

I have owned 3 civics in the last 20+ years and would own another. I currently drive a 2003 Jetta Wagon TDI. Bottom line, Everything I own that says HONDA on it(mower,genny,1971 CT70) never lets me down!

Hey Tony, how's the Civic working out? We just bought a new Accord a couple weeks back. Nicest car I've ever owned.

95 Honda 300 4-trax 4x2 ,perfect

04 Honda 6 hp pressure washer with Cat pump, perfect

05 Honda Rincon 4x4 ,perfect

07 Honda Ridgeline RTS 4x4 Wife says it's perfect. If y'all knew how hard I tried to get her in a Ram 2500 Cummins . I even said "it's not that big, look it's a short bed".

I have been searching the internet this last week for something that gets better fuel milage. Let me say they are priced high and getting scarce.

Daughter had a Honda-car for awhile, 2000 Civic hatchback. It had a lot of problems but many were probably due to the previous owner. Driver's window was always coming out of its track, the track was poorly designed IMO without enough support, very flimsy. The clutch went out on it and the relay for the headlights fried for no reason. Also whenever it rained it would run rough. . . something was getting water in it but we weren't able to track down where or what. Finally got rid of it.

Honda vehicles ive owned: 99 accord v6 coupe, 2000 acura TL, 2002 acura MDX, 2006 civic coupe. MDX has been most troublesome, rear AC no longer works, (havent had time to check it out) Driver side rear power window motor went out right when new. (replaced same day and got loaner to try out). 2006 civic had powersteering leak. fix was a tsb for bad return hose. Thats it all those cars, 3 problems. Probably wont buy anything but honda from here on out. Mom has 98 accord v6, fuel tank sending unit went out (also tsb issue) Seems that when they do have a problem, they acknowledge it, find a fix and notify their customers. Hey dodge, take notes. :-laf

That being said, i will not buy a used honda. Especially a Civic. All of the fast and furious idiots that think they are race cars, beat the snot out of them. If i knew the history, I dont think i'd have a problem at all as I know if half way taken care of they run forever, but everything has its limits.

I have a 99 honda accord coupe and a 1990 CRX. The coupe has 159k on it and the only thing I have to do is to change the oil, tires and am doing the struts in the rear next. The O2 sensors are going also so I'm going to do those also. I wouldn't trade this car for anything. I also like the VW's also. especially the TDI's.

if i get the house i am looking at getting, my commute will triple [25km to 75km]. if i don't get a vw diesel [88-92'ish], i really have my eye on a honda element [ducking from thrown objects]

Hey, can you guys get the honda FIT up there yet? I saw one the other day. They arent' the nicest looking things, but seem to have a ton of room inside for how small they are outside. Owner claimed 40mpg on hwy which isn't to bad. Figure in the fact that they are less than 14k american msrp and id be looking at one if i didn't just get the civic last year

It's a little known "secret" that the Civic gets better mileage than the Fit. Your man's 40mpg figure seems a bit high.

Hey Nick - I'm one of the few people who like the element! If my wife had been into it, we would have bought one instead of the Accord we got.
