Happy Birthday Steve St.Laurent

Cannot afford to get back into an Ultra again right now, but a (good?) deal on a Goldwing has come up. I tried to do a search on a forum websit like the TDR on Honda motorcycles with no luck. Does anyone out there know of a site? The particulars are (as it was sent to me):

1986 Honda Goldwing Aspengade SEI, Custom pin striping, ALL Chrome (ever made) ACC & Lights, W/Matching Trailer (no/license or reg), Bike Show Class Winner 9yrs. 80K mi ($3500 ??) front fork seals need leak.

I do not need (or want) the trailer, but do not know its worth.

Any and all opinions appreciated.

-frank.

I have a 99 goldwing. They are a great ride.

sounds about right for price, maybe a little high.

I might be interested in the trailer. PM me and lets talk... .

Do it!

Having owned a GL1000, GL1100I, and a GL1200 Aspencade; I think the 1200 is the high water mark of the Wings. The six is too much, and the 1000 & 1100 are a bit cramped for a six footer. 1200 is a sweet bike,handles well, does everything well. If I had found a low miler priced reasonably, I would have bought it & then bought a SuperGlide instead of a bagger. My Aspencade settled into a rhythm@80. Nice interstate bike, eats up miles & hours effortlessly. The only problem I ever heard of was the stator. You have to pull the motor to replace it. Not a fun job. Buy it! DK

Good point DK. Definately ask to see if the stator has been replaced.

I bought my 86, 1200 Aspencade 2nd hand, with about 40k. It never had the stator replaced.

I put on a volt meter to monitor the condition of the stator. One Oct day, pulling into the Costco parking lot @ noon, looked down ... around 10. 5v :--)

Needless to say, didn't shut it off, drove it straight home & ordered up the stator. Found a retired Honda mechanic that has a lift in his garage. :) The new one doesn't have the problem that the original had, bad insulation.

Great bike.

Have not had a bike for years myself, last one was a 1980 Kawasaki KZ 1000. What would most of you consider high mileage for a second hand bike. Just curious, because I may come across a good deal here some time and get a wild hair to buy. Oo.

:) Go to GWRRA on your search engine. When you get to the GWRRA site click on sites. Then go to classifieds. and click on Goldwings. Scroll down thru them and you will see what the GL 1200 are going for. Sounds like the one you are looking at is in the ball park for price. They are excellent bikes. :)

That`s funny! My bike ate it`s stator in Reno. Previous oowner`s wife said &*()it. Buy a new bike NOW! They did, left the 84 there, hhauled it home a month later, and sold it to me. It cost me $138 for the sstator and $250 to have it put in. Cheap labor for that job. The guy rrecommended soldering the connection to the harness. He said that was where a lot of shorts occur. He was a Honda dealer service manager, so I turned him loose. DK.

Wow ... the town of bad luck stators. :-laf

Yes, the plug in the harness connecting the stator "could" be a problem. High current & loose connection in the plug & melted plastic was the result. :{

Think I'll go ck mine. :eek: :-laf

It's been in the low 100's here for weeks, so the Wing has sat in the garage under cover, with the battery tender on. Backed it out just this morning. It's just brutal to be stuck in traffic, on the blacktop @ 100 outside. :{
