Just thought I would give you guys my first impressions of POD's that are honed 15%. I had about five and a half hours of driving today to test them. I also have the input of a fellow BOMBER who followed me home the whole way. :p First of all, these things make power! :D And yes, they do SMOKE. That was really cleared up by running the star wheel from near the bottom to the top. After that, if driven carefully, it barely smokes. I do have a bit of a haze, very slight, while cruising up hills, and at an idle. I cannot say how much boost was gained as the needle flys by the maximum 35psi mark. However, 30psi can be reached in second gear (results will of course vary between vehicles).

Mileage being important to me, I was very curious how these would affect it. On the trip down to the Idaho BOBM party I got aprox. 19. 8mpg with PW's, and aprox. 21. 5mpg on the way back with the POD's (both on winter fuel with the same amount of Stanadyne (sp) fuel additive). There were a couple of puffs of smoke on the way down for pictures, witch slightly affected mileage I’m sure. Also, my air filter needs replacing, and the pre filter washed. But what I don't get is that I got better mileage on the way back with some "testing," (hey, where did that guy go that was following me?). I am sure as heck not going to say these increased mileage, but doesn't seem to affect it too much.

My only concern as of now is heat. With the PW's I could barely hit 1200* which was at about 95mph. I now chicken out at 1400* which can be reached at a slightly lesser speed/rpm. We have all been looking into more fuel, which is good, but I believe that more air flow defiantly requires some attention too.

Hi Mike

Thanks for the update on the honed PODs. Keep me posted on how they are working for you. The high EGTs concern me as I will be pulling a trailer.

Bob:)

I am going to get a new air filter and clean the pre filter to see if that makes a difference. I will also be working on some more porting. I'll keep you posted.

Mike

Jay,

What I mean by 15% is that they flow 15% more fuel. I don't know if one could assume 15% more power over stock POD's. I guess I'll find out. Right now I am working on trying to burn all of it. :)

Mike

Mike- how about an update on those honed injectors?

Who did the honing?

What did it cost?

Are there any other modifications to the injector?

Jay

They are working well. I have found that you really don't want to lug the engine with these injectors. Mileage has remained good. The power is great. I don’t think these were made for towing heavy.

I got the injectors from Don Morrison at Formula One Diesel in Texas. I am guessing that he is the one that honed them. The holders have also been milled to allow the nozzle to set deeper in the bore. I believe they have the 20 thousands washers. When I bought the injectors they had about 300 miles on them. He cleaned and balanced them before he sold them to me. The cost was $320. I don’t know if this is an everyday price, or a special deal.

Mike

HEY Mike you have a phone or URL for Formula One Diesel. . I did a search and couldn't find anything... BTW do you remember where in Texas they were... .

I don’t have a phone number, or URL, for them. I believe Don is on this site (Don M). You could try PMing him.

Mike

Dan,

FWIW, I don't really know the guy, but he was great to work with and seemed to be quite knowledgeable about injectors, and fuel systems in general.

Mike

Nothing wrong with Don M. He is very knowlegable and well respected in the diesel business. He just got into too many heated discussions. Can't blame a guy for standing up for what he believes!

I'll second nascar mark

When I first joined the forum he was an incredible source of knowledge, he would get a little over zealous in his postings and that was the reason for his leaving. That had no bearing on his knowledge or his integrity.
