Honestly How Loud are they.

Stacks on a 04 Quad cab. I love they way they look, but I'm worried about it being too loud in the cab when I'm towing/drivng in the city.



Is there a way to run a muffler or resonater with them too????



If you did go with stacks what tip would be the best?

It will have a loud drone while cruising at highway speeds.
I think anything is possible. a little fabrication and you could put a muffler in there. If you leave the CAT in it may be enough to dampen the sound. just my 2cents

it will be loud and annoying... you can run a muffler, but it kinda defeats the purpose of running stacks in the first place.



though, it doesn't really matter as it's not going to sound good with no cat/muffler unless you put a 2nd gen exhaust manifold on it

Every truck I've seen with them, end up taking them off because of the drone. If you tow don't do it.

I dont have a cat on this truck. Its got a 5 inch exhaust on it now and I like the way it sounds, i'll leave it alone then.





You said swap a 2nd gen exhaust manifold on it, How?? I've read up that the factory manifold has alot of resrictionon cyl number 4 and 5. Is this a direct bolt on? What about the ATS aftermarket manifold they sell? Is that going to make it sound like a 2nd gen?



Does anyone know if you can get a pcm update without pulling my edge with attidue off????

the manifold bolts on, but the rest is a custom deal... if you know someone w/ a Smarty, you can load a program to it and then load it back to stock, and you'll get the latest program



I have had stacks and or 5 and 6" straight pipe on all my trucks, and stacks are really fun for about the first couple hours after you install them...



then they're fun for about the first 20 min after you hop in the truck.



then they're just annoying.



if you put twins on the truck it changes things a lot. I have 6" straight pipe on my '04, and it's nice and quiet (compared to a single turbo at least! LOL) with sick turbine whistle out the pipe

i bought one of them high dollar aeroturbine mufflers hoping to shut mine up so i could sneek past this one neighborhood where a cop lived that busted me once and was trying to bust me again for driving with no license (diesels are too much fun especially runnin from flashin lites). but anyways too me the muffler sucked becuase i wanted to shut the truck up and all the muffler did was dropped the db's by . 5 and got rid of alot of drone inside the cab. so this might be a great muffler to look into if your tired of exhuast drone. I now have a goofy lookin pic on my license that makes even ****** off troopers laugh and both trucks out of this house are 5" turbo back straight pipe with 7" turn outs on stock turbos. the one truck was 5" down pipe with 5" aeroturbine necked down to 4" then 5" in bed becuase the place i bought the t-pipe kit at the time didnt have 5" inlet on the website.



from experience the bigger the pipes the more they will echo their way down the pipe and louder they will be at the tips and in the cab. following the still a kid+young and stupid theme both trucks are now true 5" to the stack inlet and 7" turn out with no muffler or cat.



other tips to shut up the stacks:

make sure the exhuast is as still as possible but still has room for thermal expansion



honey comb type inserts cut down on drone



cardboard in stacks shuts them up until you get playing (i logged 84 miles no problem until i get heavy footed and had flames)



closing the windows pretects your hearing especially the rear windows.



sound barrier inside the cab and underside would work too.

people who ride your *** are a thing in the past if you stomp the skinny for a sec. just watch them "Houdini" from the cloud of smoke and stay off you rear.



smoke comes out of both stacks and forms a "V" where the smoke joins each stacks smoke.



if your stacks look good you will be dealing with idiots around you that no longer pay attention to the road. i dont know how it is for those with ugly setups.



dont expect you pretty wife or girlfriend to clean your or her stacks if you have neighbors with perv'd minds. when they realize they are being watchd their dont wash again.

Putting on an Aeroturbine is an easier and more effective way to help the sound quality than swapping in a 2nd Gen manifold. But to take it further a 3rd Gen ATS manfold helps some more. While my '03 didn't have stacks, with the Aeroturbine I put on it with plus the ATS manifold the exhaust note was one of the best I've heard on a Dodge Cummins, something I'd like to duplicate on one of my 12-valves (which would mean swapping in a 3rd Gen manifold, not very practical).

I have an 18inch MBRP resonator... Its just enough that my stacks are not crazy loud.



And yes, NO ONE tailgates behind stacks twice - They get one warning shot and that usually gets them to realize what the deal it.

Thanks guys. I'm prob going to put an new manifold on it soon. When money allows. But I've been want to stack chips. I was thinking the TS MP8. I like that I can turn it up and down for towing/having fun with it.



I need to get up a update on my pcm. I still have the stock program still in it.

it's painful on long drives... and if you tow? forget it!



if you get out of the truck after a 3-4hr drive and have a hard time hearing? that's no bueno!!!

I just put a straight thru 5" muffler on my 04 about a month ago. Made by a company called Gerlich, (if it's spelled right). Cut down on the noise considerably, and still sounds good. It's 17" long and about 10" in diameter. You can also get stack mufflers from Grand Rock, if I'm not mistaken. Cost about $52 bucks.

I tow with the truck once maybe twice a month with the two jeeps on the gooseneck. I'm just going to leave my exhaust they way it is and concentrate on manifold/turbo and one more chip.

I have 5inch straight, and it's LOUD, avoid 2200RPM's and above on the Interstates, but then again, I have a P. O. S. HARLEYDAVIDSON with straight Fishtails and a Beefy motor, that is super painful...

why would you ever want to quiet these trucks down? i want mine louder and i already have a bhaf with 5' straighpipe. i guess im just a dumb teenager though haha
