2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Hood Blanket

I just bought a new truck, and would like to know if it is worth buying one of these? Is there anything else I can't live without, I would like to stay stock for a while engine wise till I learn more.



Also would like to learn some basic do's and don'ts that may save me some greif "since I am new to the diesel world" I do love this truck though and this web site is great!!!!

Welcome aboard!

I took my hood insulation out. It is a little louder in the cab, my wife couldnt notice, but I *think* I did. It is louder out side the cab though. I haven't noticed any other difference though.

I may, however, put it back in this winter if I have problems with cool engine temps.

Not sure if you have 'em already, but definately get a set of gauges. I'm still stock (until the clutch goes) and I already have my gauges.

The 3 absolutely MOST importasnt things *every* Cummins (or any diesel owner for that matter) simply has to get are:



1. EGT gauge (also known as a pyrometer)

2. Turbo boost gauge

3. FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE!!!!!!!!!!



#3 should actually be priority number 1, because even if you stay bone stock for 1,000,000 miles, your lift pump will very likely go to the big Cummins round up in the sky, and a fuel pressure gauge will tell you when it starts getting sick, so you can replace it before it goes all the way out, and possibly takes your injection pump with it.

I took before and after readings with my sound pressure level (SPL) meter and the result was a 2 dB reduction in noise. It is noticeable, but you'll still probably want to quiet it more. Its a good first step.
