Does anyone have a picture of what these look like ?. I have one that pulled through the insulation. Can I remove the retainer without breaking it ?.

Dave

2nd that. I have removed the insulation from both 2nd gens I have owned. Only thing they did was collect dust and grime and dirty the engine. I think it looks a lot cleaner without it. I keep under the hood cleaner than the outside most of the time

But will the retainers remove without breaking. Since they are still in I have no idea what they look like under the sheet metal. I know the door panels etc. are Christmas tree's but have not seen the insulation retainers. With 115-120 ambient temps in AZ and 160 body temps I think I will keep the insulation. Many a second gen running around here with paint peeling off the hood and I do not want to join them.

IIRC, they are "christmas tree" style, but hopefully someone else will chime in.

Of course you should do what you want, and while you are right that it certainly might benefit to keep the engine running COOLER in the climate you are in, I would venture that the 2nd gen hoods running around paint are due to the sun beating down on them, not any excess cummins generated heat from the underneathe.

The Dodge part number for the retainer is 6003351.

A quick Google search turns up many photos like this:

Tons for sale on eBay, etc.

DavidC,

"But will the retainers remove without breaking." In my experience - No. Out of the fifteen I removed on my '96 only two did not break and they were not really reusable afterwards. They looked just like the one pictured in JLandry's post. Perhaps you could fabricate a thin tool that would slide in and disengage the moveable portion of the clip to facilitate removal without damaging the retainer.

After thoroughly cleaning the insulation pad I reinstalled it using large diameter round-headed "Christmas tree" style plastic retainers that I purchased from a Carquest parts store. They did a much better job of retaining the mat. (The Ace hardware store also had that round-headed style of retainer in several sizes but they were much more expensive than at the auto parts store. )

P.S., www.lmctruck.com also lists the O.E.M. style retainer in their online catalog - P.20, PN 55-1130, item #5 Hood Insulation Retainer, '94-02, $.95 ea.

After fighting the hood mat falling on my 99 with new fasteners, big washers etc I finally gave up somewhere past 500,000 miles and took it off. I was going to replace it with something else but never got to it. Might have been a little more noise, but not much

Thanks even though I have an LMC never knew these were in there.

Thanks guys, that is exactly what I needed to know. The picture helps a lot John. I will fish around and see if I can remove it without breaking. Sure miss the old days when they were spring steel. The noise would not bother me (Growing up with solid lifter cams and glass packs) but the paint on the hood going south would really p**s me off. I do not know if that would occur with no insulator but I do not want to take the chance.
