I've been thinking of removing the insulation from under my hood. The main reason for this is that whenever there's any snow it just stays stuck to the hood. Then it will freeze into a nice sheet of ice which really annoys me  and it tends to fly off the hood in chunks when it decides it's time to melt. I expect that removal of the insulation would make the engine sound louder, but that's ok :D In addition, the engine heat would be able to melt any ice that's on the hood. Has anyone done this? Do you think there may be any negative effects from removing the insulation?

Cheers,

Sean

Hi Sean,

Shouldn't be a problem as lots of 2nd gens don't have any insulation. You will hear the cummins alittle more but that isn't so bad hey. :D

Sean...

About the only negative effect would be the increase in sound. My old 89 didn't have any insulation on the hood and the heat off the motor would heat the hood up and melt any snow or ice. Removing the insulation should work fine for you.

Hey Sean, My father in law has been wanting the insulation for his '93. So if you do remove it let me know?

The paint on my hood just chalked out this past year. It had previously looked real nice. The hood insulation is still in mine.

I suspect that even with insulation, underhood heat was probably

responsible for damaging the paint on the hood. Or maybe I just got lucky?

Yall know what new insulation from the dealer cost---- a tad bit more than 100 dollar bill. Well thats what it cost five years ago.

I would suggest you take it off carefully,so as not to damage

it. Try it without the insulation to see how it works out.

If you don't like it,put it back in. Just my . 02$ :)

I removed the insulation this morning. I was careful to not damage it. It released a nice quantity of dust during the process  (cough, hack) But I ended up breaking most of the little retainer washer clips when prying them out. No matter, I can get more at the hardware store. Exterior noise is only slightly increased, barely noticable over the sound of the stacks. :D It'll be nice to not have a sheet of ice on the hood any more. Thanks to everyone for your input.

mchelius: I'll be hanging on to the insulation for a while in case I decide to put it back for whatever reason. It would be very akward and expensive to ship anyway as it's about 5'x4' and it cannot be rolled up or folded.

Cheers,

Sean

Update,

Got some snow here the last couple of days. No more ice buildup on the hood. :D Should have taken the insulation out a long time ago.

I don't have the insulation, paint looks great, but I still have sheets of ice form and crash off onto the windshield when on the highway... .
