Hood Liner

Someone was talking about hood liners for late 2001 and 2002. The cost was about $50. They didn't mention that it also required 15 fastners at $2 each.

still worth the cost.

I paid $35 for the hood liner and $2 for the 12 or so fasteners just last week, definitely worth the trouble.

This week I also put in the hood liner on my '02 TD. The parts came to about $90. 00 by the time you pay for the 15 clips to hold the liner on. Then having to remove all the electrical wiring before you could even start. Did it right in front of the parts place at the dealership. Why is dodge so cheap they can't provide the little things. I would rather they provide a package that included the hood liner, rear fender wells and illuminated vanity mirror. These little things are welcome and needed.

PS, The bed liner is worth putting in. The turbine whine is much quieter and I can turn down the radio... WHAT did you say????

I put a liner in last night with an extra layer of soundprooffing. A big difference!! At 70 you almost cannot tell it's a diesel.

Now did I do something good???!!!! The wife will like it.

What insulation?

Fox: what did you use as an additional layer of soundproofing?



One of the few areas that I haven't added any extra insulation to is the hood. So I'm curious what product or material you used.

It is a single sided (aluminum ) matting that I got some time ago from JcWhitney.

You should try to find some longer plastic holders if you do this as the stock ones are too short.

If you need I'll find their part number. It was a 4' by 6' roll.

What's the point of having the Cummins if you can't hear the rattle? I love to see the looks on peoples faces when I pull into parking lots and such.

Fox is right! Even with as much time and effort that I have put into 'Operation Quiet Cummins', I still have PLENTY of "Cummins Music" when the windows are rolled down.



Just like any 'music' I want to have a volume control and preferably an on-off switch.



My main pleasure from the Cummins is the awesome torque and horsepower on tap without having to rev the engine to 6000 rpm. And I'm still getting 16-19 MPG.

I was the one who started the thread a couple of weeks ago. I did mention the cost of the fasteners but I said the dealer charged me $1. 49 each. They gave me the liner and fasteners at cost because my NV5600 had to be replaced when the truck was only 4 days old. It's hard to pay that much for something that you know costs about a nickel to produce but the design is so unique that I was afraid to try anything different. BD

Is it that much quieter with the hood liner in? Is it possible to remove it without destroying the liner or the clips? It might run cooler in the summer with it out. I cant think of anything else to do to make it any louder.

Make it Noisier?

If you want your truck to be more obnoxious than factory, then removing the hood liner would be a start. Next remove the front inner fender liners.



Look in front of the door hinges, inside the fender. There are some foam plugs that help block noise getting to the doors. Pull the foam plugs out, save them to make foam ear plugs for your passengers, [if you can coax them that close to your truck]!!



Buy stock in hearing-aid companies.

I was reading TDR months before ordering my truck. I joined about the same time I put my order in for the 2002. One thing I learned from that early reading was that I wouldn't be getting a hood liner on the new truck (along with many other things ). It just so happens I was trading my '95 2500 in on the new one. Well, somehow the old hood liner disappeared from my old truck! It was an exact match for the new one. I even reused the clips. I did blow a whole can of black spray paint on the liner before installing, so it would look nice and new.



Anyone who wants one should try a local junk yard and maybe find one cheap.



I had the truck for a while before getting around to putting the liner on. I used that time to take some sound pressure readings at various speeds. After putting in the liner, there was a 2 dB drop in cab noise. It was a noticeable improvement, but it is still louder inside than I would like.

Looking at the alluminum foiled liner.

I know my stock liner touches my battery post (front passenger side) as it sagged over time I guess.

Are those liners good clearance from the posts?
