Horn sounding when backing

Gentlemen, I have found that if you disable the seatbelt chime on the 06 models that it also disables the horn sounding while backing up with your door open. You can find the instructions on page 45 of the owners manual.

Mine does not seem to honk if I open the door after I start backing. So i back with the mirror for a second then open the door. I usually belt the belt behind me if I really need to see what I am doing.

That is was a cheap way to satisfy the federalies. I still think a good wordsmith around here might be able to write a letter outlining that what they have done is not a repair and is not practical for how the vehicle is used. We could all file the same complaint with NHTSA, our congressman, and DC. But since I haven't done any of that I'm not going to complain about it.



It is crazy that they could figure out how to make the horn honk but you still never know what gear you are in. If it is such a great idea why don't all cars and trucks do it? Nevermind, don't give them any ideas.

I agree, it's a MAJOR PIA to load my camper with that GD horn! Too funny. It took me by surprise the first few times I backed up to park, you can imagine the fun!



One solution is to ride the brake pedal while backing up, since the horn only honks when the brake pedal is NOT depressed while backing (and door open). Later!

What is this horn issue yall are talking about? My '03 does not do that. The seat belt man does stay on all the time if I do not buckle the seat belt, but it only chimes when the truck is first started. I disabled the annoying automatic door locking feature but have never had a horn issue?

If you look down the list of TSBs from the last year you will see one for a gear shift alarm or something like that. On an automatic the gear shifter is not really connected to the indicator very well. So it might say N but you are really in R or D or some other combination of the above. So instead of fixing the problem DC got the Govt to say it was OK to change the computer to blow the horn if your foot was off the brake, your seat belt was off, the door was open, and the vehicle moves (or is not in Park not sure about that one). But if you are trying to back a trailer into a spot and you need to take the seat belt off and open the door to see what you are doing and you start backing the freaking horn starts blowing and it scares the bejesus out f you and almost fall out of the truck because you forget the darn thing is going to do it. I mean the first million times you backed into a spot the same way with all other vehicles the horn didn't blow so why should it on this one? At night it wakes poeple up and is a general nusance all around. So most people find a work around like a scotch connector or jumper on the seat belt wires, or clipping the belt behind them, or riding the brake. But in reality the whole thing is a just a dumb way to try and fix something else without fixing anything. It just creates worse problems like people not having a seat belt reminder.

I wonder if under the Freedom of Information Act, we could find out how many people actually complained or had a problem, to warrant this BS?? The NTSB issued the recall so they have to have the info... ... ... ...

Hey BBoling... you may be on to something with the brake pedal trick. I wonder if a toggle switch connected to the brake light switch would work? Flip the switch - turning on the brake lights -while backing up should do the same thing as having your foot on the brake!

Or maybe a relay in the reverse light circuit to make it think a foot is on the brake. Should be pretty simple to do.

I went under the drivers seat, found the wires cut and saudered them together. No horn when backing up. And no Seat belt alarm when i am offroad deerhunting... .

Excellent - a real fix that doesn't do any additional harm - and i don't have to remember to hit a switch when I start driving again! Which wires are they? I assume that there are two wires which lead to the seat belt catch...
