Does anyone know how much horse power our engines can withstand and remain reliable? crank, bearing and such...

Thats the million dollar question! HVACwas at 650hp last I heard... several 12 valves were over 600hp on just #2.

Are they still reliable... . so far, yes.

Hey there Tuefelhunden:D Reliable to you and reliable to someone else is two different ball games. Some people consider rebuilding and engine every 6 months a reliable engine due to the amount of power it produces. Others throw a hissy if the engine goes south after 400,000 miles of bombing and hard pulling.

A good question is how much power will she put out before stuff starts breaking? I believe the valve trane is the weakest link in the eqation, with the exception of bearings. Keep the valve trane from grenading and the tensile strength of the crank and other major componets will take care of them selves.

You might do well to look at the Cummins home page and check the applications that they stick the engine into. As a group, we already know a few basic facts. The more we train in peace time, the less we bleed in war! :D Translation from the formal language of the Corps, would be this; The more we bomb the engine and push the envelope of performance:D :D , the less we have to worry about when the chips are down on that long pull up the hill with some Chuby or Phord thinking they are the gods of the road. :D :D :D And like the Corps, we do more with less

SEMPER FI :D :D! Well my estimates from DD's web sight, I guess I'm pushing around 450 HP. It good to know there is more room to BOMB, I fall into the bracket of not wanting to rebuild but, the faster the acceleration, the more the adrenaline... . you know the feeling! Like jumping from an OV10BRAVO:eek:  :D :D :D

The RV version of our engine puts out 275 HP and 660 ftlbs of torque. I figure the engine can withstand those numbers with no problems and still last a long long time.

I am pretty sure that cummins has sold the "B" series engines in 375HP configurations. And history shows from their "HD Diesel" series they(cummins) always stay on the safe side of reliability. I would say 425-450 would be a good number for long life... . The important things to mind are RPM(Overspeed and Lugging), Heat (water and EGT's), Clean food (Air, Fuel and oil) and a kind word now and then;)
