I am considering the additin of the electric fan clutch to my 98. 5 2500. Anybody have insites on this?? Thanks

I have the Horton Fan Clutch on my 1998. 5 ISB.
The Horton has the following benefits:
1) No HP drain at highway speeds since the fan isn't being powered.
2) less cab noise at highway speeds.
3) faster warmup.
4) better cooling when the fan runs since it's at 100% of engine RPM.

I got about 1. 5 MPG better mileage after the Horton. If you order it through MOPAR, make sure you get the new part # that is for the 24 valve. A Horton for the 24 valve is different than the retrofitted Horton from the 12 valve. If you need more info on the part numbers, let me know and I can dig them up. (may take me a while to answer since I leave for Elk hunting camp towing a trailer to the Colorado mountains tomorrow)

I purchased the Horton Clutch through my local Dodge parts department. List price was about $800+ but the dealer gave it for me a small markup from what they paid making it about $740. The parts deptartment was helpful, but I had to tell them exactly what to order. The Horton was also on national backorder and took a couple of months to get it.

If you're a member of a Cummins Power Booster Club, they can get a 10% discount on the list. You might check with them. I think I saw an add in the TDR that sold it for $695.

Installation is pretty easy. You need to install a temperature sensor, an air conditionind pressure sensor, and a manual override switch in the cab. Getting the old fan off and the new one on requires some big wrenches and a chain wrench, but isn't too bad. It took me about 4 hours to get it done.

I would love to get a Horton Clutch fan too. But its just TOO EXPENSIVE!!! :)

I put one in. Ditto on all the advantages. I got the "retrofitted' 12v kit for the 24v. Don't miss the change slips in the instructions. Got mine at the August rally in Indiana from schneid diesel for 700$. The fan rarely runs; the most annoyning is at traffic lights with A/C of defrost on the fan cycles with the A/c compressor.

Just wondering, why not go with a quality (but much less expensive) electric fan setup? Anyone take this approach? Don't see why a good electric fan setup couldn't be as reliable & effective.

The electric fan was discussed on the TD list some time ago. It seems that they just don't make enuff wind for the diesel when you really need it.

You're on the right track Joe G. This was discussed in TDR issue 25 (current issue) in Scott Dalgliesh's "Second Time Around" column as well as by a letter, submitted by Horton Fan Clutch.

I'm sorry Vaughn, as I was at work when I posted my last response, I was unable to verify the information. After getting home I discovered that the previously stated information (in my last post) was in fact, in issue 24 of the TDR. Sorry for the inaccurate information. Scott Dalgliesh mentions in his article/column (Second Time Around) that two other issues (issue 21 and issue 23 I believe), have detailed installation procedures on this on the 12v engine.
