Greetings from sunny Las Vegas!!!

Just had a great conversation with the Western Rep for Horton Fan Clutches. .

He says that there are some N. O. S. parts still kicking around for the Horton kits that were available years back for the second Gen trucks. He also will help me locate the vendors that made the little stuff such as the IMPOSSIBLE to find tee that goes in the A/C line.

If you are looking for a part or parts, even maybe enough to do the whole conversion let me know and I will pass it on to my new B. F. F. at Horton. He has offered to help us all in any way that he can.

Back to the casino I go... ... ..... :D

Hey Mike, are you a dealer for Horton?

I have been doing some research on this upgrade but some of the measurements confuse me, blade pitch, fan hub depth and such. it appears the clutch is still available (996018/EC450) but not the fan. Yet there appear to be several fans that fit the clutch...so is it that they won't fit, for whatever reason, the Dodge application? The OEM#986013 appears to be the original Dodge application number and crosses to the new number.

Are there any members that still have/use this fan clutch?

Is it possible to upgrade to the 3rd gen clutch? Anyone try/do it?

Nick

I damaged the fan blades on my 94 drag racing it.Could never find a replacement.I left the rest of the kit installed. If you do find a replacement that works I will pass the info to the new owner.

Anyone??

Doing more research, it appears the 3rd Gen ('03) fan clutch is very similar to the Horton as far as fan mounting specs go. They both use a 5" pilot hole in the fan and a 6 bolt 6" circle. The fan is way too large at 26" v/s mine at 22", and only 4 bolt. However, Horton has several fans in different blade count and diameter that will fit the clutch, including a 22" CW/CCW. I would really like to do this upgrade (3rd gen) to get away from my lazy thermal clutch.

Nick

After more research, the 3rd Gen/4th Gen are both CCW Fan drives, my 2nd Gen is CW, so the clutch will not thread on my fan hub, dang! So now it is back to Horton...

Nick

Change fan hubs??? Might not be a bad idea..

I ran this down several years back and did not find a fan with the correct pattern.

No resources right now but will take a look later on...

And change belt routing to third gen...

I wonder if that is possible due to the belt drive power steering pump v/s 2nd gen. gear drive? I have also been looking at my direct drive fan on the Ford, but kinda hate to do that. I have even studied a way to lock up my thermal clutch but that might cause more problems than it will solve?

Nick

Forgot about PS pump BUT still wonder if it could be done with different belt and stuff. Need to think that over, that fan hub rotation has to work with the threads..so when I get home I'll open hood on both trucks for visual input...

Cool thanks! I have a hard time even with a diagram:D Here are a 2nd and 3rd gen. Looks iffy...

The 3rd Gen fan turns in the opposite direction. I don't know if it would be a problem with the fan clutch engagement turning the opposite direction. The fan is also running on the smooth side of the belt so you'd need to run the 2nd Gen fan pulley. The 3rd Gen diagram above is a bit deceiving. The fan is still directly above the crankshaft, not off center as shown in the diagram.

I'm just getting home and I have an appointment later on so time is not on my side for the next few days. Tomorrow at work is going to be a nightmare.

Flying in I was pondering what could be easily done to get a fan clutch with a common fan bolt circle. I have some FL70 Vins at work from early 90's versions using a "B" series with a Kysor thermostatic fan clutch. I wonder if that might be an easy changeover.

Scott, you must have had some of those in your bus fleet back in the day...

All of our Cummins powered buses run a Cummins fan clutch. The CAT's run Horton. The cheapest Cummins clutch costs us $735. The cheapest Horton is $645.

I'll gladly post pics and measurements if you'd like, but personally, I think I'd stick with my stocker before trying to run one of them.

I'll look up the Kysor clutch tomorrow. Just a thermostatic viscous style which was pretty durable. I don't think the price was bad BUT it has been a while..

I had a parts house fan clutch lock up one time, in the middle of winter in IN. The noise was mind numbing and it might have been psychological but I swear it had less power.

I learned my lesson and now only use OEM. At the time I had a lifetime warranty clutch from Auto Zone. IIRC, i activated the warranty 3 times before I gave up on them. They didn't cool real well in the summer either, never locked up enough.

I was afraid of that. If I go direct drive like my Ford you can't hear the fan. It is 1 to 1 drive v/s Dodge, I think is 1.3 to 1. It (Ford) has a 10 blade plastic Cummins fan and seems to move a lot of air. I see Geno's has a 9 blade 20" fan that they claim is 39% more efficient v/s the stock 7 blade 22". I don't think it will help tho because the clutch is just too slow to engage. When it does, it is too late and then can't keep up at all. It is a new Mopar.

Nick, just came across this thread. I still have and use a Horton fan clutch on my Dodge. The Horton has been the best upgrade I have done to my truck. Installed in 2001 with around 39k miles on a truck I purchased new. It has been trouble free since day one and has paid for itself with improved MPG and more cooling when needed. Let me know if I can be of any assistance with pics etc.
