How exactly does a Horton Fan Clutch work? I gather that is is a electric engage, but what makes it so much better than the factory unit?

Also, can it be wired so that it can be engaged by the flick of a switch like electric fans? Oo.

Thanks!

I put one on my 92 years ago, I liked it, but it had a rattling noise at about 25to 30 miles per hour. I wasn't going to spend that kind of money and have to listen to that noise, when that was the speed limit in the town I lived in at the time.

I liked it, it automatically came on and it had a manual position on the switch. At an idle, on manual, with the hood up and my wife standing by the fender, it would mess her hair up like she was out in the wind. If I remember right, it was wired into the AC and to the cooling system. I don't remember much more. I thought I read at one time that they aren't available any more, but I could be wrong. You could hear it when it came on.

I talked to a guy years ago that had one on his 1st gen and he really liked it. Other then his name being Bob, I don't remember his last name.

Hope this helped.

If you can find a fan blade for you truck BUY IT!!!! They have stoped making them. Put one on mine in 99 & have had no problems with it. wireing kit has switch in dash, a/c & coolent temp.

It works just like an AC clutch. It will come on automatically when the psi gets too high with the AC on or when the engine temps get too high. You can also turn it on manually in the cab. Mine sounds like a big rig when it's on or when it's on and I accelerate. It also will move some serious air and can drop coolant temp about 30 degrees in a little over 30 seconds. In 100 degree plus weather in stop and go traffic, AC on the coolant stays at or below 180.

Thanks guys for that, but since you have one in your trucks, can I ask one more?

After assessing the parts, I see that there is a wiring harness that goes with this unit. What is the wiring harness connected to? What is it for?

Where I am going with this is I am able to get a fan and clutch assembley, but was told no wiring harness. Now I will have to fabricate one. How involved/easy will this be..... ? Where do all of the wires go?

Thanks!

Robert

I've heard that there is a guy in WA that will build you one but it is a long shot for me to find him.

That being said the wiring harness connects to the A/C, the cooling system and to the fan clutch itself. When the high PSI in the A/C gets too high it turns the fan on and when the coolant temp. gets too high it turns on the fan also. It also lets you control everything manually. I use the manual control and don't rely on the automatic controls. To me this works much better. I have my old installation manual for this fan around somewhere - just saw it recently - and can make a wiring diagram for you. The one catch is that the book is for a second gen. I was however able to get it figured out. I can also put together a wiring diagram from the one on my truck.

Just let me know what you want and I will try to help you out.

Hey Bob,

You are awesome! Anything you can draw/sketch/describe/recommend for me would be wonderful!

If it helps, this is going into the crew project.

I can go one better I am making a copy of the "Mopar Install Manual" as we speak. It has everything you will need. I will go through it tomorrow and try to make sence of it for you. PM me with your mailing address and I will mail it to you on Thurs.
