Finally got around to the preliminary work before the the real installation starts next weekend and wouldn't you know it - for some reason, there have been a few changes in the OEM wiring loom from DC, ,which are apparently incompatible with the Horton kit. (specifically the switched, low current feed line)

Question is: Any other TDR owners with a 2001 model year truck and a Horton fan fitted yet? How did you address this anomaly? Any other installation hints, suggestions that the Horton manual doesn't mention?

Cheers!! :)

John,

I installed my horton approx. 1 year ago in my 2001. I don't recall any problem's. I'll get the manual out and go thru the install to refresh my memory, and get back to you.

Wiring Harness...

John,

The harness was upgraded to include both 12 valve and 24 valve engine applications. The large inline plug/connector is not used on the 24 valve engine. You can understand why I gutted the factory wiring and used what was required for my 24 valve application.

James, appreciate this feedback. I'm still researching this one. I hate to start a job that I cannot finish for one reason or another and as my truck is a daily driver, I don't want it to be off the road for any longer than necessary.

Call me a cynic!!

... ... ... ... . Well, it's got a lot clearer now. I can confirm that there IS a discrepancy in the Horton Fan installation (wiring) for the late model 24valve Dodge trucks.

The relevant details are documented pretty well here in this PDF file..... Horton Fan installation. Now from where I'm standing, this wiring anomaly has arisen only because the good ol' guys at DC have apparently not been as co-operative  as they usually are, what with changing wiring details mid-model year!! tsk, tsk.

It's not too hard to understand that the reality is simply that because any aftermarket (non-Mopar ;)) products get the $$$ and not DC, then their motivation/enthusiasm is somewhat less!!

The major change affects the connection to a key-switched 12 volts power source and this is where the Horton supplied loom has been compromised by the Dodge wiring change. Check out page 21 in the .pdf file and you'll see what I mean. The connector for the harness adapter now has to be spliced into a key-switched 12 volts power source and the connection will be into the light Green/Black wire on the harness conenctor itself, which will in turn provide the +12vDC for switching the relay

John,

I think you have it pretty well nailed!! I took my 12v switched power from an aux. fuse panel that I mounted behind the removable lower dash panel below the steering. I got the panel from Waytech mail order. I have all my toys switched thru this aux. panel.

Wiring...

John,

Install all the wiring before you do the mechanical install of the Horton Fan Clutch. The truck will be driveable until then. I was able to take advantage of than empty factory relay slot to control my Horton. Jacobs exhaust brake can also turn on the Horton.
