1) What kind of hose do I need to replace the one on my half-steel, half-hose wastegate line that runs across my engine from the AFC to the turbo? OD of the steel line is 1/4". Coolant hose? Fuel line? Something else?

2) I've seen many turbos that simply have a short hose from the intake side of the turbo to the wastegate. Do many people modify the setup from the one I have to the above described? Is one better than the other?

3) Why is the hose nearest the AFC so long? Protect the valve covers? [The green dots represent the "unnecessary" length of hose.]

The hose is Cummins part # 3920200 Plain Hose. I believe the extra length over the metal tube is to reduce the possibility of leakage.

GAmes, thank you for the part #. It looks as if Cummins has superceded it with #3938056. I found a seller who wanted ~$6 for the part and $16 for s&h...
I'll be looking into Bob4x4's suggestion.

I haven't touched the hose yet. I fear it might not reseal well as it has hardened up good. In any case, my search continues for now.

I finally pulled them. Both seem fine. There's an extra long 9" section at the AFC. Just under a 2" section at the wastegate, and it looks like this:

There's no need to loosen up the screw farthest away from the wastegate. Also, I found it easiest to access the wastegate once the wheel well liner had been removed.
