hot oil smell

New to TDR and Cummins. I bought an '04. 5 about a year and a half ago. I change my own oil (Shell Rotella) about every 4000 miles. About 2 oil changes ago I got a strong oil smell in the cab. I ordered a new crankcase vent filter from Geneos and this last oil change the smell has increased greatly. Even at stop lights. Time before last I checked the vent tube and it had a small amount of oil inside. This time its black. Hasn't dripped on the garage floor yet. Any one have any ideas? Thanks alot.

The additive package in the Rotella can smell pretty rank in the right conditions.

It can go on for a few thousand miles after an oil change before it stops smelling. It happens with both of my trucks.

This is assuming that you have no visible oil or transmission fluid leaks.

I've heard this complaint about Rotella before as well. It stinks for a while but eventually stops.

Sniff the dip stick or pull the dip stick and run it between your fingers and take a whiff you may get your answer.

They don't call it Rosmella for nothing. Castrol Tection was even worse.
