Changed p. steering pump on a 97 3500 with hydraboost..... After finally getting air bled and brakes and steering working correctly ... The pump/oil is running veryhot. So hot a steam vapour comes out of resevoir if open. Body of pump hot enough to burn fingers on contact.

This after 50 miles on road. Everything seems to be working and sounds good..... just running veryhot. There is no cooler on the truck .

Anybody ran into this before?

There is 450,000 miles on truck

Thanks

Steve

I would suspect the pump is under a constant load and is pressurized due to a restriction somewhere, or a malfunction causing the pump to be in relief all the time.

The pump has to run at a constant pressure to supply power to the steering and the brake system... the pressure relief valve should be set with the correct spring pressure. . I assume you installed a re-built unit... I'd contact the vendor and ask the correct operating pressure and temperature... use and infrared point and shoot temperature gauge to check the temperature. . I can tell you that any temperature over 220-240*F will shorten the life of the fluid and cause damage down stream... .

Can we assume that you correctly flushed the system before you connected the return line to the reservoir... any metal in the system that went back to the new pump can damage it...

Truck has been on service calls for last 24hrs.

Steering assist has just quit again. The brake system however is working properly.

Have ordered another napa pump and all new hoses to install in morning. Hopefully can get to bottom of this. Will post up the outcome.

Thanks for replys.

Napa warrantied the first pump.

Second pump was installed with new pressure and return lines. System was flushed and I backfilled lines to help prime the dry system.

After several minutes of lock to lock no more air was burbing but you could still hear it near end of return to left hand lock on steering.

Started truck and cycled a few more times... ..... held against stop limit to make system relief open... and bingo... big burp of air .

Truck is back on road running and braking as it should with NO abnormal temp in the system.

The old 97 may make 1,000,000km yet... . only 100,000 more to go... . if rust dosent win the race first!!
