Boat Engine Options

The first T-Bucket kit is going to have a 318 in it. I already have the motor and transmission.

The next project will have a DIESEL! Would really like the help of you and Deo...

OK, fine - 318 in the first one. Any chance you could sell the 318/transmission?! :D

Deo and I have more ideas than we do time or more importantly... money. We'd love to help... I don't think Deo would mind me speaking on his behalf. :-laf

Here is a source for the 3-53 Detroits, seems like good prices to me.

Detriots

I saw a 1953 Ford F-350 dump truck a couple weeks ago with a 3-53 aluminum block in it. The guy didn't seem to know alot about diesels in general but did a real nice job with the conversion. The truck sounded real nice going done the road.

Tim: Yeah, that's the place where I found the aluminum 3-53's out of the old 'Gama Goat' military trucks... they have very low hours and seem like a darn good deal.

Dan - a Detroit 6V-53 is a 318cid engine... :)

Matt

568cid and only 318hp? I'd be disappointed too...

Like many people have always said - the non turbo 2-stroke Detroits do a fine job of converting diesel fuel into noise... and not much more.

Can you imagine an aluminum 3-53 with a REAL Jake brake off a 6V-53 sitting in a T-bucket? *drool !!*

Matt

Hmmmm, you have my mind going in circles... It looks like a really cool project.

Could you see the look on the local street rod guys faces when you pull in with a DTB...

BTW... If anyone reading this thread has a hot rod, PLEASE post some pics!

I think the street rod guys would crap their pants.

EVERY time I have been in the pits next to either Doug Doring or Doug Sotira's (sp?) trucks... they get a LOT of attention - especially when they fire them off. :D

Hey, Matt,

How about a '36 Hudson Terraplane 2-Door Sedan with factory suicide doors and the long fold-in-the-middle hood with a small I-6 or V6 with the automatic transmission? I bought the 'Plane back in November and it's all disassembled right now and still in the planning stage. Like you, I don't want the same old stuff you see everywhere. I do want something I can enjoy and drive any time I want. Don't want all the chrome engine parts - those things don't make it run any better.

I am considering something like a Dakota or S-10 or Ranger V6 & automatic & rear end. Maybe the whole chassis if everything measures out just right. Then I'd have the new(er) brakes and suspension. Probably some adapting, but since the body on my 'Plane is outstanding (other than the front floor area) so I don't want to have to cut it to make it fit.

Going to be a fun project.

Doug Lives about 5 Min from Me, We used to knock on his bedroom window about 1am in the morning when we were street racing so he would fill our nitrous bottles. :D

Wayne:

I'd probably choose the GM chassis - but the V6's they slapped into the S10's weren't all that good. The 2. 8L ('83 to late '88... until the 4. 3L came out in late '88 - then not too many folks ordered the 2. 8L) is a complete piece of garbage... the 4. 3L also has a sketchy past. The TBI (VIN code "Z") 160hp engines had the least amount of trouble... in '92 (VIN code "W") - they introduced a 190hp version with a problematic fuel injection system (CPI)... later versions of the Vortec were bumped to 200hp. It only had one injector - but 6 poppet valves. I have the whole intake manifold and injector/poppet system in my basement off an engine that I swapped into my old truck... . The "W" Vortecs had better heads (swirl/Vortec), a balance shaft, and I think they had better rods... they made plenty of power - but a lot of them grenaded. I had good luck with 'em - but always kept up on the maintenance.

The highest OEM HP 4. 3L's were in the '91 GMC Syclones and the '92-'93 GMC Typhoons (also have VIN code "Z")... . they made 280hp in OEM form (turbocharged/intercooled) and 330ft-lbs... . they ran REAL nice. The injection system for that version was a multi-port batch-fire with a really nice plenum setup and the same throttle body off the TPI 5. 0/5. 7L's in the Camaros and 'Vettes. Keep the injector o-rings fresh - and you'll never have a problem with that injection system.

The Ford V6's were gutless - no matter what year you went with.

The Dakota platform has the factory V8 option - but the 318's were gutless too...

I'm chuck full of S10 info if you ever need it. I'd love to see your progress on that project...

Both Doug's are great guys... maybe someday - they'll realize how well the 4-stroke Cummins run. :D
