Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) hot rod vp install?

I helped a friend install a hot rod vp and the truck rattles pretty bad. I feel the timming is off. But the gear did not move. The truck falls on its face if I nail it. Fuel pressure to the IP is good (walpro kit). Any help would be great

Is the key-way installed correctly? There is an arrow on it.

It is and industrial pump. The idle is actually ok. There is white smoke. And it is hard to start. Sounds like timming to me. The pump slid on nice and the gear slid on the pump nice. I feel like an idiot.

do you have the key in backwards maybe? They do go in a certain way since they are usually offset. I forget which way the arrow should be facing though. I think its towards the pump, but I could be wrong.

Ok, I just double checked, the arrow on the key should definately be facing the pump. Maybe thats something you wanna check.

I double checked everything. The key was fine. I pulled the front cover and checked timing. All was OK. I swapped out the injectors to a newer set (100hp)

thinking that might be it. It was not.



I have to start to think the pump is bad. I have fuel and fuel pressure. I have all new filters and the pump is installed right. Driving me crazy. .



I should pull the pump and send it out to be tested.

I just talked to industrial. I am using the key from my old pump and need to use the key that this pump was bench tested with..... I have to find that key.
