Your question has been asked and answered here in this forum so often it has become boring. Try searching for previous threads.

The quick and easy answer to your question is you can't just buy a truck and trailer and become a hotshotter. Start with a visit to your local department of motor vehicles/transportation, whatever Michigan calls it. Ask how to become a commerical trucker owner/operator.

There is very little money in it after all expenses are deducted.

Due to competition and fuel costs, there is not as much money in that business as there once was. However, it seems that if your overhead is low, you can make money.

Here's a good link that will give you a good idea of what is involved -

Hauling for hire...

Quite complicated and costly to do it legal, but can be even more costly if done illegally!

What type of industry is around there? Here in Texas, there is so much oil and gas exploration, EVERYBODY and their brother has a hot shot truck. They all must be "cutting a fat hog" off of it though, haven't seen any hot-shot rigs for sale. All the local wrecker services have hot shot and heavy haul divisions. I don't know much about the specifics, but for some customers, you have to get on their "vendor list" which includes having a specific amount of cargo insurance. Some of the compression companies and drilling companies require the company I work for to have a 5 million dollar policy just to come onto location.
