It seems like my truck's starter makes an extra skip when I start it while it's still hot, she starts fine, just not the one click like in the mornings. Is this the prelude to some thing bad, or is this just one of those "don't get all paranoid" deals? Guess I'm so used to her just roaring to life with one crank... . spoiled I tell you.

Man the power jokes at work all seem to skip a beat to start:D .

Mine starts a little slower when it's hot also. I have no idea why. It seems that there didn't used to be much, if any, difference between hot and cold starts. Seems it started doing it more after advancing the timing but it seems that would make more difference when it's cold not hot. It's a very slight difference so I'm not really worried just more currious then anything. Any ideas, you Diesel know-it-alls out there?

Try a little throttle with a hot start and see if that makes a difference. Could be with your fuel being hot you aren't getting a full charge of fuel.

Kalaehina:

Iv'e been chasing this same problem for a while now. I changed the overflow valve, and this did not help at all. Iv'e bought new fuel hose to change the supply and return, but have not installed yet. I have a friend with a 97 that is doing the same thing. Maybe it is something simple, like idle adjustment!

Well I have 3000 gsk to put in and I think there is an idle adjustment possibly done during the install or after so we'll see if that makes a difference. Thanks

Hmmm, mine behaves the exact opposite... When it's cold it takes a few turns before it comes to life, but when it's hot it fires up on the first crank...

Piers once told me that the shut down solenoid can get slow to open when hot if the plunger is dirty/rusty but when cold works fine. It will get worse especially if the boot is torn. Be careful when removing to clean if the boot is shot, parts can fly!

I pulled my solenoid this morning and it seems to be clean but I blew it out anyway. It also operates freely but I did find that the little hiem joint end was not straight and was rubbing pretty hard against the washer on the back side and had worn a fairly deep groove in the back side of the joint. The picture was taken after I adjusted it. I doubt this was causing any problem but it might have been binding some, time will tell. It would probably be a good idea for the rest of you to check this and make sure the joint is straight.

Iv'e had my solenoid off twice lately, once to clean and see if this might be the problem, and the secound time to clean again and install a new boot. Neither time made a lick of differance.

P. S. "CumminsPower98" it looks like you need a new boot also!

illflem,

Do you have a number for them.

I check with my local dealer a few months back and they wanted something like $39. If I remember correctly.

BGDUMMY,thought you wanted the part# that was right in my post but now realize I was the BGDUMMY, it's 800-937-0336. I got a flier from them a few months ago saying the price had been lowered, check your local supplier again.
