While adjusting my dash lights the other night I found the dimmer surprisingly HOT.

Is this a normal condition in a 2002?

It's normal, the dimmer you have the dash lights adjusted the hotter the switch gets. There was a recall on older Rams to prevent the dimmer from becoming excessively hot causing damage, hopefully this was incorporated into the newer ones.

In an old post, one member drilled a small hole in the air duct beside the light switch so that the air stream would cool the switch. (a BOMBed light switch);)

I was the member that did it. I pulled the switch out and punched a 5/16" hole in the top of the air duct under the dimmer wheel. It allows for some circulation of ait over the heat sink on the back of the switch. The switch still gets warm to the touch but not hot And I have driven 6 hours at night with lights about as dim as they will go.
