I have a NV5600. I saw a add for a fast cooler for manual transmissions, and I was little worried since I do pull a large trailer, should I be worried about heat. Has anybody put a temp gauge on, or had any problems.

I think Steved has a temp gauge on his NV5600... maybe he'll respond to this thread.

The NV5600 *should* be quite capable of towing within the GCWR of the vehicle without overheating the oil. Above GCWR, I don't know.

That transmission is a big iron and steel beast, which means it can take a lot of heat. But obviously you don't want to be cooking the transmission fluid.

I would suggest that a regular fluid change interval coupled with a good quality fluid (perhaps a synthetic?) would obviate fastcoolers.

We've just put and NV5600 in our 04 after 230K miles pulling a 22K lb trailer...

We feel the failure is from 6th gear that isn't designed to handle that heavy load... I think I should have ordered the 3. 73 rear end and driven it in 5th instead of the 4. 10 in 6th most of the time going down the highway... .

We've since moved this truck to a flat bed for the rest of its life with us... . so it won't ever see those loads again..... unless a break down on the new truck that is... ... Hope this helps...

BTW - we never worried about temperature..... we had a temp gauge on the 01 5 speed and it never got hot pulling the same trailer... .

I pull a 24' race trailer, under 10,000 lbs, and have a brand new rebuilt Standard Transmission (of Ft. Worth) NV5600 because the original nv5600 had no synchro in 6th (bought truck used with 180,000 miles)

Amsoil syncrhomesh fluid, and fast coolers and I see temps creep slowly to 230-238 degrees in 80 degree weather, engine temps 195 water. Standard Transmission say 30* over engine temp is usual.

I would prefer a 3. 73 rear vs. my 4. 1, as the sho vp44 and edge/juice and 4" exhaust are ample power for 3. 73. I believe 6th gear cannot take the high torque load as engine power will enable me to take most any hill in 6th.

Many views on nv 5600 capability to pull heavy loads in 6th. I am amazed at high temps, old trans with the special Dodge trans fluid had much lower temps, perhaps I should use it instead of Amsoil, but listers here prefer Amsoil, generally.
