Replacing a carrier bearing

I have an 01 2500 4x4 with a 5.9 and a 5 speed. was pulling my camper down the interstate the other day, and I had a new alarm go off on my juice w/attitude. My transmission temperature went off. It said it had reached 250°. I was towing a 28' camper at 80 mph. I was wondering if if anyone had any thoughts on the matter. If it was just over loaded, or if something might wrong. And should I change the fluid now that it got that hot. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

The reason I ask, is mine was bad out of the box (Edge Juice w/cts) The dealer had no luck fixing it, so dealt straight with Edge and they couldn't fix it either. I told them never mind, I would use my own, but at times it will give a bum reading too. I have a temp gun and check it, the gear boxes are always ok, with it.

Ok. Well it has never read high before. That's while I assume it wasntw a fluke. When I backed her down to a slower speed it started to cool down a bit.

I can't post a link, so go here (dodgeram.org) click on specs, then click on NV4500 they have the recommendations for oil.

Nick

I run 80 mph with a 25 foot gooseneck loaded and have never ever seen temps that high even up hill I would get an infared thermometer and check the trans temp and compare with the gauge in the cab I’ve never seen even 200 degrees running heavy pulling big hills

I had temp issues that ruined/trashed my NV4500 at 195kmiles because of using the wrong oil (Severe Gear) from AMZOIL and they have the correct oil so my new transmission NV4500 has the correct oil from AMZOIL. I think you can also get the correct oil from GM and it is a Castrol made product and my trans had those numbers on the fill plug tag!!

Yes on the mopar lube! When that transmission was first built by New Venture, and used by Chevrolet, The lube specified was made for GM by Castrol and the fill tag on my 99 CTD had that Castrol # on it. I crossed this with the engineers/sales at AMZOIL after my trans failed on Severe GEAR screw up! and got the correct lube from them and now have about 30 k miles on the new trans which I found on line in a brand new MOPAR box and there was a factory note saying the it had the fifth gear retro fix in place!

I’ve seen those transmission on eBay . Do you tow a lot ? How heavy?

Yes! I tow with it for 8 months a year and never unhook the 33 ft enclosed 6 sled trailer at about 11K. I hook up to the sled trailer after elk hunting towing 4 wheelers on a smaller traileer about Oct 25th and I just unhooked the sled Toy Hauler June 6 after the last snowmobile ride of the season! Great season of riding but only 980 miles on my sled. I still love the 99 CTD and can't get myself to get a newer one as I can still fix everything on it that breaks and I will be putting the new 275 hp injectors in it soon to replace the stock ones as they are worn out and causing cold weather starting problems and the drive train is really in good shape as I have kept up with most everything except body rust but that doesn't hurt the way it goes down the road and tows!!

Is that camper higher than your truck? I can see your trans getting hot if there was a cement wall behind the truck especally if when your going 80 mph. You probably did not even have a head wind!

That sounds good but my net is usually around 13,000 on top of a 16,000 pound truck and trailer
