Hot water heater

Ive had my 1988 TT since 1997, and have never flushed out the hot water tank. So I thought it might be a good idea. I assume the way to do that is to just open the relief valve and let it drain. My question is: Will that drain the entire hot water tank ? (when I did it, I didnt thinkit looked like 6 gallons of water came out) Also, is it a good idea to just hook the system up to city water, open the relief valve, and just let it pour ?

I believe there should be a plug for a drain valve.

Don't open the relief valve because it will leak water after you do it.

If it's high up on the tank you won't drain anything anyway.

Look for a plug down low.

Or just save yourself the headache and leave it alone.

If it's been that long all the deposits are hard as a rock and won't come out anyway.

You may have just opened pandores box. There is a large pipe fitting (plug) on the botton side of the tank. If you can still remove itdo so and that will drain your tank. The plug that you remove had a electrolises(spel?) rod attatched to it. Probably not anymore. Draine the tank and then hook up to a water source and let it flush out. IMHO you have a big problem by not maintaining it for so long. Oh well have fun!!

Yeah the valve on top is just a pop valve to relieve pressure in the heater so you can safely remove the anode rod below which requires something like a 1 1/8" socket and an exstension. The anode rods come in 2 sizes they are cheap and they are meant to corrode. Good luck

I think I may have been lucky. I found the drain plug, and it came out with no problem. I ran quite a bit of water thru the tank, and it comes out clear. When I replace the plug, it went back in just like it was brand new. Water still is clear.

If no deposits came out, I would open it back up and with a metal hanger or similiar object, scrape it around inside the tank. It's probably hardened to the bottom and the walls.
