When I first got my truck, I invested in a "chip" that supposively makes the vehicle inoperaberable even if the thief tries to hotwire your car from the battery directly to the starter.

Seems to me that since our trucks need a computer to run, then if the computer isn't on, then even turning the starter won't make the trucks start.

Am I right?

YES :)

Mark,

I was interested in lowering my insurance rates by installing an anti-theft device in my truck and was wondering if you could post some info on this chip.

Thanks,

Dan Wela :D

Dan-

Dunno if they are a nationwide company, but the company I used was called "Boltz Security Systems" in Nashville, TN.

I'm not sure how it works, but you have to either have the chip to override the system or the code programmed into your keyless entry fob to make the truck start. They claim you can't even hook up a battery to the starter to make the truck work. So far my truck has been vandalized 3 times, but I still have it!

Be careful with those anti-theft devices as most of them make it easier to steal.

Most of the units I have seen are a little sensor box, that determines if the matching key\fob\magnet or whatever is present, and turns on a little relay to connect the ignition wires\starter\computer. Most thieves know that if they yank the relay, they now have convenient access to the wires (or at least some of them) needed to start the truck.

This is also a common problem with alot of remote starters\alarms as they give the thief convenient access to the wires to hot wire the truck.

Most installers will just find an easy mounting location for the unit, which is usually right under the dash, easy for a thief to find.

If you do install one or have one installed, make sure it is well hidden. You can also rewire them differently so the average thief will not be able to figure it out.

If you want some tricks on how to do it,or to make your own,let me know.

Clutch Switch

OK, This raises another question. I have been wanting to wire in a switch to the clutch switch as a theft deterant. As long as the second switch is in the "open" (or off) posistion then hot wireing would be imposible right?

The clutch switch would stop them from hotwiring it from inside, such as shorting wires,or using a spare ignition switch.

But it is very easy to jump the starter, with a wire or screwdriver. The clutch switch only halts voltage to the starter soleniod,so all they would have to do is bypass it and it's running.

Best way to do it in your case (24V electronic) is to kill the electronics. Do it on the ground side if at all possible, because most thieves will try to hotwire it (or jump power to it). Not many think of looking to ground things. It is also alot safer as if your wiring shorts out,you won't fry things.

Also when you are rewiring stuff to make it theft proof, make all the wires the same color or put labels on them that are wrong. that way when they goto cross the wire that says "hot" and the wire that says "start" and "run" they manage to ground out the starter, and add a few more wire for the fun of it that run nowhere. This will confuse them and they might give up.
