OK, once I get the shrinkasaurus manifold replaced, I will most likely get a new HX35 from PDR. My question is, which housing should I go with? Would my 12 I have now do ok? or do I need a 14 gated, or 16 non- gated? I will be primarily towing, and at 4000+ ft. GVW loaded hovers around 20K, empty is 9200. I get 18 pulling the empty trailer, and drop to 12 or so towing in 4th at 60. EGT climbs FAST if I go 5th under 68 or so uphill. Nascar Mark? BushWakr? Any ideas or personal experience would be appreciated.

I've got a 14 wastegated and have towed about 30,000 trouble free miles. It gives what I consider excellant all around performance from sea level to over 9000 ft. As a matter of fact my Cummins loves altitude. The higher I go the more it wants to go. I also added an exhaust brake and so I feel as comfortable coming down as I did going up. :D

Mark,

What were your EGTs towing? I dont plan to go into the mountains, but I see 7000' everyday on the ridge south of Calhan. I have a good advance on the timing, and with the 12, I never see 1000 deg, but that is post turbo. I figure since my next thing is a manifopld (like in the next week or two), I will move the thermocouple then.

Also, how does the modified HX35 sompare to our stock H1Cs as far as boost, mpg changes, etc? I peak at 24 or so now, with a little bottom end smoke at take off.

Thanks, guys. One last question, how much difference is ther between the 14 gated, and the 16 ng? I was thinking of going 16, just for the higher flow at more throttle.

I'm not a towing expert but I would go with the 16cm as mark mentioned. Generally for a given pump setting/injector set you will loose about 2psi boost for every size UP that go in housing.

You can use the wastegate to limit your upper end boost/drive pressures, after all that's what the wastegate does right...

Still, Piers recommends the 16 as a good all around housing for spoolup and towing. His modified HX35/16 would be perfect. It will spool quickly due to his mods, and the 16cm will help with breathing at top end/WOT.

This will make up for the faster spoolup of a 14cm housing without the potential for high drive pressures or over boost.

That's just my opinion and I have not yet run an 14cm but will soon.
