December Dieselfest Report

How about it all the southern members could come up in the winter and see how we start our trucks in the dead of winter. We could go drift bustin on back roads. 3' to 4' drifts are a blast.

I'm all for that!! I'm in Sunfield, MI (halfway between Lansing and Grand Rapids). I tried contacting John Henning (listed in the TDR as a contact in Battlecreek) but haven't gotten through yet (always busy). I'd be interested in forming a Great Lakes chapter if anyone else is. We can't let all these southern and western boys have all the fun!

No thanks guys, I lived my two winters in Traverse City and working in Kalkaska. You can take your ice, snow, and cold and shovel it... ... . Like they say, there is 4 seasons in Michigan... . June, July, August, and Winter.

Count me in I live in Elba Michigan just west of Lapeer, about an hour east of Steve St. Laurent. and about an hour north of Doc Tinker. I think a Michigan Chapter would be great.

Hey Doc Tinker I too drive past the Silver Dome (GO LIONS) every day. That is because
I work at Chrysler Headquarters. Wave next time you go by.
Chrysler just opened a new museum I haven't been to it yet but have seen some pictutes and it looks pretty nice.
Maby the MOPAR museum would be a good outing for the Great Lakes Chapter.

I'll take it Des, the only way it could get better is if we only had one season - Winter!! I'm a snow freak - snowboarding and drift busting!! When everyone else is battening down the hatches for a snow storm I'm hitting the road!! Can't wait to try out the new truck on em! I took my brother in law out drift busting in my GMC Sonoma 4x4 a couple years ago and at one point we went through a drift that was about 1/4 mi long and over the top of the hood!! I didn't realize I wasn't on the road anymore until we were bouncing across the corn furrows. When we got back I opened the hood - completely packed with snow around the engine. I had to replace the fan shroud as so much so came THROUGH the radiator that it broke the plastic shroud. Well worth the $30 for the shroud!!

I don't want to sound like I'm bashing Michigan, cause I'm not. The summers in Traverse were superb. Being from the south, snow has always been nice to see... once in a while. Five to six months of white stuff just got old.
Steve, just something to think about before you head out on the snow trails. Put some extra weight in the bed. My diesel had a bad habit of breaking traction at every red light . It also helps to keep the rear tires on the ground when traveling over those not so smooth secondary roads that N. MI is known for. 800 lbs or so should do.

My input here isn't about setting up a full-on event with $$ backing from DC and/or Cummins, but I thought I'd tell you a bit about how we do the L. A. TDR chapter.
In the TDR there is a page of names and addresses of members who have volunteered to head up a "local chapter". Here in L. A. , it's Scott Dalgleish. He has accumulated a mailing list of members who have contacted him about a local gathering. Recently I volunteered to take charge of the mailing list for our group. Scott pays for the postage out of his own pocket.
Anyway, here's what we do every few months.
We get together at a restaurant on a Saturday morning for breakfast and a parking lot b. s. session. Usually we get about 20-25 people and 18-20 trucks. Many members have businesses selling parts/accessories, such as Roy w/Mag-Hytec and Scott w/Amsoil, so they have tailgate sales presentations as we all gather around. It's a good chance to get information and buy some goodies, and of course it's a great chance to see what others have done to their trucks. We've also tried to have a "tailgate swapmeet" where people bring along parts that they want to sell, like original bumpers if they replaced them with custom ones or whatever. Our gatherings usually break up around 12 noon.
Based on my experience with helping organize a breakfast, along with the suggestions of our members, I offer you these guidlines for setting up your own gathering:

1. Pick a location that is relatively centralized and close to freeways or major roads so that it's easy to get to for those who are driving from a distance. That's a problem we have in L. A. , it's so spread out that it's difficult to have a centralized location without getting into a bad part of town. We don't want to be dodging bullets.
2. Find a place with a large parking lot where you can park away from other vehicles in your own cluster, where nobody will bother you. Here in L. A. , the last few gatherings have been at an Int'l House of Pancakes in a large shopping mall parking lot.
3. A relatively inexpensive menu with lots of variety means that everyone will be happy. This is another advantage of IHOP restaurants.
4. Work with the manager of the restaurant in advance to see if they can accomodate the entire group at one large table. The IHOP that I've been coordinating with does not take reservations on Saturdays, but they said it doesn't get crowded until after 9:00am. So we eat at 8:00 and clear out when the crowd shows up. Management is very understanding and friendly, and they enjoy having us.
5. Make sure it's okay to park all your trucks in the parking lot for a few hours. Before the IHOP, we got booted out of the place we used to go to. They got mad because we were hogging up too much space. At the IHOP, we park away from the restaurant in a wide open area of the shopping mall parking lot. Nobody has bothered us.
6. Get the word out via this board and put your name/phone# in the TDR as a local chapter volunteer (do that now so it will be in the next TDR's when the weather warms up). Or if there is a local chapter volunteer in your area, give them a call and ask what you can to do help. When you do set something up, tell people to bring friends and relatives along who own Dodge Cummins trucks. It's a fairly low percentage of truck owners who are TDR members. Many owners out there don't know the fun they're missing.
7. When you do accumulate a mailing list, keep track of who comes and/or RSVP's. There were a lot of people on the L. A. list who would never show up and never bother to reply and say "I can't make it this time, but let me know the next time. " After wasting the postage on these "deadbeats", we took them off the list to save money. If you do set something up and pay for the postage yourself, usually a few people who attend will be considerate enough to kick in a few bucks to cover your exepenses. One time at our breakfast, all the meals were on one tab. After the tip, we had something like $13 leftover because people overpaid a bit. Everybody said "keep it", so it went into the kitty to pay for the next mailer. I've tried to accumulate an email list to save on postage, but not very many in our group are on the net.
8. Don't schedule a gathering on the first weekend of hunting/fishing season or a holiday weekend, or during the middle of summer when everyone's on the road.

So there you have a guideline for organizing your own local gathering. Don't sit around and wait for someone else to set something up, get involved! It doesn't have to be a Saturday morning breakfast deal. Leon Mendenhall, who organizes the Antelope Valley chapter (Palmdale/Lancaster Calif. ) has a gathering at a restaurant on a specific weeknight every month.
Bring the spouses along too. They all seem to enjoy sharing a laugh about us and our "big toys for big boys", while we're all gawking at yet another engine bay with the latest "super turbo injectomatic filter pump-drive intake speeder-upper" or whatever.

I got through to John Henning's wife (he's listed as the contact in the Battle Creek area). I left a message for him to call me back but she said he hadn't been contacted by anyone yet. Thanks for the suggestions Andy. I've got an idea for a few get togethers I'd be glad to organize some stuff. I have organized several clubs over the years. I was thinking that we could make our first get together an informal one. I own a full acre in Sunfield (halfway between Lansing and Grand Rapids) about 10 miles off of 96 and am also right next to the town park and their grass parking lot. It's a tiny town of only 600 people and there is a restaraunt downtown that is about a 3 minute walk from the house. We could get together at my place say around 9:00 am and then head over for a breakfast then come back and chat about and show off our trucks. If someone's planning an upgrade we could even pitch in and do it here. I've got plenty of tools and space - my paved driveway can park 14 or so normal sized cars. We could do this in early spring I'm thinking so there's plenty of time to get the notice into the TDR. Other ideas I had were to link up with a truck show like the Jeepers event in Kalamazoo (usually in august I think). Last time I was there they had plenty of space left over and we could have our own diesel class. We could chip in some $$ and have a trophy for our class and all. I have contacts in the show truck world so I could probably arrange it. Heck we could possibly even get some Ford guys out for it and see who wins! Another thought is that maybe we could get NW Cummins to do a dyno days for us. Let me know what you think. If anyone has ICQ my # is 8841079.

Good question, Doc. I don't know! I'll ask Robert Patton when I see him at the dieselfest. I wrote it down to remind myself. I'll post something Saturday night or Sunday.

Hey, Great Lakes Chapter is a great idea! I think I speak for myself and also Vince Harris when I say this. Somewhere in south central Michigan would be great! Maybe White Pigeon or something... Vince and I are from Cleveland, but wouldn't mind driving 200mi to get together for a weekend with other members. How about members in Chicagoland and Wisconsin? Where are you guys?

No I'm not at work that early I work 2nd shift. But wave anyhow your in a Dodge and someone will wave back.

I live off Hadley in Elba not far from Metamora. I take Baldwin every day. Actually Baldwin to Oakwood to Hadley to Merwin.

I bought my truck at Krane Chrysler Dodge in Lapeer. Never again. They are a 5 star dealer and as far as I can tell 5 stars means they know how to screw you 5 times better. I'll never buy another truck from them. Told them that and they could care less. Where is Richmond Dodge and where did you buy yours? I'm looking for a new dealer.

Yea the "A" plan sure is nice. Thats not why I bought a Dodge but it sure helped.

Doc, here's the answer to your question. I talked to Robert Patton today and he said "Have at it, if you guys want to get together, go for it. " I asked if there was any type of policy that must be adhered to in order to call it a "TDR" get-together, and he said no. If you want to organize a breakfast/BBQ/whatever, "more power to you, have fun!"

I live in central Indiana and haven't had any luck at setting something up. Would be interested if not to far up into Mich.

Peep,
I know of at least 3 others here in Indiana. We'll see how many we've heard from by the first of the year and go from there.
How about it, anybody out there from Indiana interested in an Indiana TD club?
