Today I went down to Cummins to pick up some oil and a filter to change on my truck. I was shocked when I discovered that Valvoline Premium Blue 15W-40 a semi-synthetic has been superseded by Valvoline Extreme Blue 5W-40 a full synthetic. The shocker was the change in price the Premium Blue ran about $8+ a gallon, the Extreme Blue doubled in price up to $17+ a gallon. Needless to say I just got the filter and am now wanting to switch to Chevron Delo 15W-40 which I can buy at Costco for cheap. What are the implications of making this switch form a semi-synthetic back to a petroleum based, if any? Thanks, Jason

Ditto on the Rotella T synthetic 5-40 at Walmart. $12. 83 per gallon and that appears to be their regular price. It was almost $19 a gallon last time I checked. It was a recent price rollback. Hard to beat that price and Rotella has always been a good oil. I just picked up 4 gallons and will be replacing my Amsoil soon.

I did it!

I haven't had a CTD for ten months.

I used Shell Rotella 15w40 during spring, summer and fall. During winter I used Shell Rotella SB(synthetic blend)in the 10w30 weight. I went with Shell to keep like additive packages,so I didn't worry about chemical imbalences in my oil pan(just my head)Only had the truck 55,000 miles but I had no problems.

Try a Shell (or other choice) distributor,or a farm and fleet type store. Oil companies have info on their web sites.

P. S. I was told by a lube engineer that switching between like proucts is o. k. in the gasser I'm now driving.

Just make the change. The semi-synthetic and the Delo are compatible. You can even mix the two. There won't be any coagulation, explosions, or demons.

8 qts of dino oil and 3 qts of syn??? I have often wondered ?

There will be some benefit, but not as much as running full synthetic. Keep in mind that semi-synthetic or "parasynthetic" oils are in reality synthetic oil cut with dino oil. By making your own mix, you would be doing the same thing.

I have used the premium blue for about 15 years and haven't heard anything about this. A couple weeks ago I bought 8 cases from an oil dealer. Did you try anybody else?

Enlightened.

I just did the math and you guys are not saving any money with dino. I figured at 12000 miles you have changed your oil four times at eight dollars a gallon. That is $96. 00. I put twelve (1 case) quarts of Amzoil 15-40 every 12000 miles at $56. 00, plus two Anaylizations at 27. 50 for both. So I pay 83. 50 per 12000 miles, have the added protection of full synthetic and anaylize for $12. 50 less. And I don't have to waste time and resources of changing every 3000.

Champane Flight:

I have been using the above mentioned oil for 15 years in my Cummins diesels. Cummins recommends 30,000 mile changes with this oil, which I do. Of course Dodge isn't going to go along with this in the pickups, but if you do 6,000 mile changes it only comes out to $55 for two changes.

You should also be figuring in the cost of make up oil and mid-interval filter(s) when going with extended changes. Also according to the recent poll here very few are going with 3k changes.
